Evening all. Thank you for your kind thoughts. Sadly my dear friend died on Friday however it was peaceful and her husband was with her, very capably looked after by the wonderful hospice nurses. We are now helping to organise the funeral which is a bit draining but needs sorted so we can celebrate her life properly. I'm desperately sad but relieved for her if that makes sense and I have many wonderful memories to look back on. As she was such a generous hostess my other friend and I have offered to organise the funeral tea on a home baked basis.lots of work ahead however it seems fitting.
I'm taking mum to London for a few days at the end of the week to visit buckingham Palace and see some other sights. Not sure if the funeral will be before or after the triip however we both need a break. I'm also looking forward to enjoying some proper weather. We had a single dry day on Friday which reached a whole 16 degrees so hardly summer.
The magpies have stripped my gooseberry bushes. I couldn't pick them as they weren't ripe but that didn't seem to stop the birds. We will need to have a proper fruit cage next year, the netting just isn't enough.
We discovered some monstrous things growing in one of the raised beds and I had no idea what they were. The only thing I remembered planting were radishes. I was thinking of the little round, red radishes however these are massive Chinese radishes called Daikon apparently. They are enormous and honestly don't look terribly appealing so I have no idea what we will do with them. Lesson there is to read the seed packet more carefully next time!
I had a Costco trip at the weekend and treated myself to a litre of Maple Syrup. Other than pancakes I have no real use for it but I was drawn to it so I feel a trawl of my Canadian recipe books coming on. I'm sure they will be plenty inspiration in them.
So I'm off to empty the dishwasher now before an early night. I'm shattered, work is very busy and I have an emergency dentist appointment tomorrow as I broke a tooth today. It's not salvageable however it's a huge one and I feel like my left cheek has collapsed inwards because there is a hole. Goodness knows what my dentist will do. Really not what I needed but these things are sent to try us:o
Hope everyone is well and able to get some relaxation in the heat. At least I am in no danger of overheating up here:D0 -
SM I'm so sorry to hear that your dear friend has left us and so understand that your sadness is balanced by relief that her ordeal is over and she is now resting. That is so normal as a reaction especially as you cared enough about her to not only be praying for recovery but also praying for her sufferings to be short and her life to be painless. You will hurt but also there will be relief for her because it is ended. I'm really glad that her husband was able to be with her at her ending and in time you will all be able to remember her with a smile and gladness, when the sadness and hurt have diminished. Give her the very best sending off that it's possible to give her and have in your heart the knowledge that as long as she is loved and remembered by all of you she will never truly be gone, she will be sharing your smiles and feeling your peace and loving you back.0

SM I am so sorry your friend has left you, but you say she had a peaceful passing and I am sure she would have known her dear husband was with her.
As we become older I know we think more about how we will leave this world, and my only wish is that it is peaceful and with as little pain as possible. It sounds as though the Hospice care managed to do this for her which must bring you all comfort.
As Lyn says remember all the lovely and happy times you had with her and give her a good send off. She couldn't have anyone better than you to do this, and make her some of your special cakes.
I am sure your Mum will enjoy her trip to London, so have a good time and by what I have been hearing on the news this morning hopefully our weather should be kinder to you. Carol was saying you had had, I think, 480mm of rain during the last couple of months which is one and a half times more than you would normally expect.
Many hugs to you, and condolences to her DH
Much love
