Hi everyone :-)
FTM - oh no - hope you are well on the mend soon. Glad to hear you are being well looked after.
Candlelight - I hope Flora likes her new toy, and very glad she's taken to the new litter box.
We had a busy weekend (don't we always?) DH was the assitant referee for 2 rugby matches back to back on Saturday. The rain tipped it down for the entire time, but these were adult matches at a relatively high level so good experience for him. He got a little bit of money for it too (usually its completely voluntary) so that was a nice surprise. I sat in the car and did some work, and when I got really bored went to the hardware store to look at paint colours for the bedroom.
Late night on Saturday watching the All Blacks v Wallabies test... so up quite late on Sunday. More bits of work and a trip to garden centre to replace my poor slug-eaten beans. Also got some purple sprouting broccoli, some more spring onions (red ones) and 3 chilli plants - also to replace slug-eaten ones. DH was an absolute star, spending yesterday afternoon clearing all the weeds growing through the patio gaps. I finally got that lemon tree planted, sowed pea and carrot seeds, but lets not talk about progress towards house decluttering....
If the slugs get all of this lot, I really don't know what to do. I have a few beans under homemade cloches (tonic water bottles) which I really hope will help, but everything is just getting decimated.
Dinners were a mousaka and sag aloo with egg, both from the freezer (not the egg tho!). Also got 8 portions of pumpkin and chickpea curry into the freezer and 5 portions of Tibetean noodle soup for lunches this week. DH is right - there is no more room. Aiming for 4 dinners a week to come from the freezer, plus a lunch or 2 to run down stocks. I'll have another chicken stock making weekend next week and that will get rid of the chicken carcasses waiting to be used up at least.
Right, phew... thought I'd come to work for a break but looks like it's not to be today....
love to you all,
Hoglet x0 -
Good evening all,
Well it has been a fairly eventful day here with the winds. Next door's front wall came down. It was only about 3ft, and had looked dodgy for while, but a strong gust of wind just finished it off.
Himself piled the bricks up, luckily they fell into the garden, and I texted the owner to tell him. He spends most of his time at his girlfriend's so he probably wouldn't find out until the weekend.
Thankfully the winds are dying down now, because I do worry about the damage they can cause.
The fireworks have started here now, it is going to be a long few weeks until 5th November, and usually after as well.
We will be changing the clocks this weekend so the late afternoons will be quite dark and winter will defiitely be on it's way.
FTM how are you my friend? I hope the medication is working and that you are being well looked after,
HOGLET you make me tired just reading your posts:rotfl: You are always so busy, bless you, and you and DH sound so happy together. hope the slugs are not too much trouble at the moment, do you know I cannot grow lupins in our garden because the slugs eat them from the roots. I have tried so many times, and tried so many remedies, but they always beat me. I must have the fattest slugs in the Midlands:mad:
I am off to have my nails done tomorrow, and \himself will carry on to DD after dropping me off. She had a really good physio session last Friday with some new exercises, and she seemed happy after the session as well, so hopefully onwards and upwards.
I think that is all my trivia at the moment. Take care of yourselves and stay safe if your weather is bad.
Much love to you all

Morning everyone
Candlelight - what drama with the wall! Glad it didn't damage you or your house (or Flora!). And thank you, those a re such nice things to say. Wow the slugs eat your lupins from the roots? I've not heard of that before but I would never put anything past those pests. I am out on slug patrol every night now, nothing else seems to be working. I'll never get rid of them all but at least I can do what I can to save the plants.
FTM - I hope you are feeling much better
Miserable day weather wise yesterday, only ahd to water the hanging baskets (it is under the eaves of the house so doesnt get any rain) as everything else had a good drenching.
Started on the declutter - sorted out 2 sets of drawers and some of my wardrobe, got a little pile for the charity shop. Had a clear out in the bathroom too and sent a few unused toiletries to the Women's Refuge so at least someone will be able to get some use from them.
Other than that we continue on - having a few family over for a BBQ on sat, and we have a long weekend this weekend so need to think up something to do on the Monday. No doubt it will depend on the weather!
Just a short ote from me this morning - the morning seems to be running away with me!
Love to you all

Morning all, weather here is much improved on yesterday but decidedly cooler,I have the joys of a dental check up just after lunch today which means lunch will not occur for me until I get home again, hate eating then going to the dentist, just yukkk!!!
FTM I hope you're feeling much improved by now and that the tots are completely over their virus too. Hope that Fionna goes from strength to strength and has healed by now and is much more comfortable and also that little Emma is completely over her viral pneumonia too , what a lot you've had on your plate lately girlie, I hope life gives you a respite period now and that everyone stays well including you.
HOGLET I think slugs will always fill a void, so no matter how many of the little beggars you dispose of there will always be other just waiting to take their places. Keep on with the cold steel treatment it's all you can do other than give up gardening altogether and that's unthinkable!
CANDLELIGHT I sympathise with the fireworks, I hate this time of year with a passion for all those pets who are terrified by them, I wish there was a limit as to how long they were legal to use I think a weekend before the 5th the week it's actually in and a weekend after the 5th is more than enough to let the madness happen but no, it's weeks and weeks worth and then again at the New Year. Not all modern traditions are bad ones but this is sheer lunacy, yes?
Have yourselves a good day, Lyn xxx.0 -
Morning all - quick, as i am supposed to be working:o
Thanks for the good wishes, I am finally 100% better. :T Hope everyone else is too. Whatever it was, it was nasty.
Things are jogging along here. DD is still loving her course and her new life. I miss her, of course, but am so thrilled that she is happy - and my house sure is tidier
We are going through the selection of 6th form phase with DS - we thought he would do a BTEC in sport at a local college, but he has thrown a spanner in the works by now saying he wants to do A levels. Really he wants to leave and start working, but he is the first year where they must stay at school until 18 - apprenticeships are an option but i am not sure we will be able to find what he wants. He isn't the most academic child so it means another 2 years of mum nagging him about homework.
We had a nice bonus yesterday whereby a very small endowment paid out - we don't need it to pay off the mortgage as we have been fortunate enough to do that already, so we are going to refurbish the bathrooms (2 bathrooms and downstairs loo). They are rather desperate having last been done 15 years ago (and then on a shoestring) and we want some benefit before we sell the house in a couple of years time. We won't do the work ourselves (we lack the skill) but it is a chore sorting out someone to do it all - without spending more than we have to. it will already take all the endowment and a little more, but will be nice when it's done.
OK - best wishes to all. back to the marking.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Morning everyone :-)
MLW - a later evening (OK, almost the middle of the night) slug patrol netted a much better catch of the little blighters. Caught one snail merrily making his way up the outside of one of the cloches - the cheek of it! Anyway, they are no more and the beans live (just) to fight another day. Quite right, I could never give up gardening!
Well Friday has rolled around again.... Looking forward to a long weekend here. Saturday will be busy as I'm going to fetch a set of desk drawers I bought from Trademe (NZ version of Ebay) - $20 instead of $250 brand new. I need to buy another trellis for the passionfruit and I must plant out the remainder of my tomato seedlings.
Got some of the family coming for a BBQ on Saturday night. I was going to faff about with homemade burgers and whatnot, but just going with a pile of steaks and the odd sausage to make life easier.
Need to give away vast portions of the herb garden - back door only just opens owing to the rosemary bush and the orgeano has completely taken over. Thank goodness I put the mint in a pot....
Small drama last night - I was out watering the garden when much shouting and swearing came from the kitchen. DH had done quite a good job of trying to slice the end of his finger off..... Anyway, usual scene, blood everywhere, DH standing with his hand under the tap saying, 'It won't stop bleeding.' Well no kidding it won't with your hand under the tap. Finally managed to get him to sit down and apply some pressure to it. Whilst I was googling nearest hospital (I'm sure the one we've gone to before is actually not the nearest and is a pain to get to) the bleeding did stop, so he is bandaged up and I'll be keeping an eye on it. Whilst we have both done a lot of first aid training he really is not a good patient, always does the opposite of what should be done!
I think that's it from me, love to you all,
Hoglet x0 -
He he, Hoglet, I do the late night slug / snail patrol and then feed them to my ducks
My neighbours think I am quite mad
No more eaten plants and they get turned into eggs. I don't tell my egg customers needless to say...
Hope OH's finger heals up soon.
VJs, glad you are feeling better and that DD is settling in. Congrats on the windfall
FTM, just (((hugs))) for everything you are all going through xxx
Candlelight, you are a good neighbour. Glad DDs physio is progressing well.
SM, AOT and ThriftWizard - hello!
Had my first session of root canal treatment last night. About 3 weeks ago I had a filling break (have only ever had two fillings, been very lucky).
Have been in pain (sometimes quite severe) on and off ever since so it was a relief to have the treatment yesterday and the result today is no pain - next session is in two weeks when it should be finished and filled.0 -

FTM my goodness you have been poorly and poor Fern as well. It is a miracle no one else has gone down with it, fingers crossed. I don't know about you, but I hate being sick, I am such a baby.
I knew the menfolk would look after you, and what a good thing too. Will you be starting Christmas projects with the girls once you are all better? I absolutely loved doing things with my 2 girls when they were young, and then of course with DGD1. Unfortunately DGD2 isn't really interested in crafts, she is mainly, drama, dance and music.
As usual DGD1 and myself will be going to the NEC on the 8th November to the Craft Show, so having to save a few pennies, and I always take lunch and bottled water with us. She is such good company and I love her dearly.
The Charity have been to collect our 3 piece suite, so just waiting (excitedly) for tomorrow morning when new furniture is being delivered. I told you it doesn't take much to keep me happy.:)
Unfortunately Flora doesn't approve of all this upheavel and is asleep on our bed at the moment.
I have stripped both beds and washed the linen. I think we have slept in separate beds for long enoughNeither of us is coughing as much thankfully, so shouldn't keep each other awake much.
HOGLET enjoy your long weekend and hope the weather stays fine for your BBQ. Poor DH I hope the finger is healing OK.
LYN I hope you are enjoying being with DD and are you helping with the table decorations for the wedding?
KATE, SM, VJsMUM hello and glad you are now recovered VJs Mum. I had food poisoning once and it was just awful, you have my sympathy.
AOT have you had your op yet, if so I hope things are going well?
Have a good weekend everyone and take things steady.
Much love and hugs to 2 special little girls

Hi candlelight. I had my op yesterday so now have my right hand and wrist in very bulky bandage. It's quite painful at the moment but was advised to take plenty of painkillers.
Please forgive short message but typing (or doing anything) with only one hand - especially with left when right handed - is not easy.
Hope everyone has a good day.Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without.0
