I always like to tie loose ends up as well.

Ask to speak to a manager.

If I do leave it open, I'm just worried that I'll be charged an unarranged overdraft for not having enough in that account... Because the current account balance is £1 since July 11, I turn 18 in September, when I start getting charged for not having enough in an account or going overdrawn!

Don't know why you think this? We have 2 Halifax accounts that have only had £1 in them for ages, and they are not bothered.

It happened to my friend. When he turned 18, he had a £1 in his Halifax account they charged him for not having enough in his account... may of missunderstood him though...

I'm going down to the branch near my work tomorrow. Hopefully then I can express my concerns!

Write them a "CUSTOMER COMPLAINT" letter and tell them to close it.

    and / or

Ask your current bank to arrange a switch closing your old account.

Personally, I would just write a letter requesting that my account be closed, asking for the balance to be transferred to sort code xx-xx-xx, account number xxxxxxxx, confirming that I've destroyed my card, and asking them to confirm in writing that the account has been closed.

Just hand it in at the branch or put it through their letter box.

Phew what a long winded thread...............
This is the answer so, so, so very simple.
  • I have only ever sent a letter requesting the closure, telling them where to send any balance and signing it off with my signature. After doing this I've always found my account has been closed without Halifax ever needing to get back in touch with me.

As for the overdraft fee, this should only apply if you were to try and make a payment on that account for more than £1. That would then be a case of not having enough money in the account, as far as I'm aware they don't dictate that customers should have a minimum credit balance or else be charged! If they did charge you unfairly for only having £1 in a dormant account, I think you would be in your right to complain and get this refunded.
    Thank you competition posters!

Until they return in a few months time with another thread titled "lost bank card unable to get any money" it would always be advisable to have more than one bank account should any unforeseen circumstances arise.
This seems to be a bit of a trend on MSE though i find - dragging things out.
Discussions could get dragged out all day long & we could end up discussing every possible eventuality, when all the OP will want is to know how to go from A to B.

If i would want to know "extras" i'd ask "is there any reason i should not close this account". If i don't ask this & i'm only asking how can i close an account, then bizarrely enough, i'm ONLY wanting to know how to close an account. I'm not interested in extras.

It's like the "for-fun" thread in the houses forum the other week when someone asked about house prices 10yrs from now (or something to that effect). It was a simple yes/no question.

Yet people had to go over the top & turn it into some sort of serious debate, which if in person, would be a "heated discussion". It's nonsense.
