Halifax keep palming me off every time I try close my account?!

All I want to do is close the account
Just be persistant. The problem with having a "forgotten" account with £1 is that at some time you might make inadvertant use of it. I don't think it would apply to a Cardcash account but Santander customers who "overlooked" the small print of a notification ended up with underfunding charges. So its always best to close an unwanted account.
BTW which bank gave you a full service Visa Debit card?0 -

As the OP is 17 I have a suspicion they may not possibly be aware of the different types of visa debit cards available.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
Just LEAVE it open
and make all statements show on-line (so you wont get any of there post)
and start a fresh somewhere else,
i have a barclays and RBS account i never use.. just a few quid sitting in there for a LONG TIME and i never get statements because they are online
(so nothing in post)
- Just leave it open man, it's not going hurt you. (better to have more than 1 account anyway)• HSBC (Main A/C)
• Halifax Back up A/C
• Lloyds (Spending) A/C
• RBS Back up A/C
• Barclays Old A/C
• Nationwide Old A/C0 -

Who has mentioned a full service debit card? the OP just wants a visa debit branded card rather than an electron branded card0

If I do leave it open, I'm just worried that I'll be charged an unarranged overdraft for not having enough in that account... Because the current account balance is £1 since July 11, I turn 18 in September, when I start getting charged for not having enough in an account or going overdrawn!0 -
Always better to close it. I have an unused Barclays account, but I still check it every month just in case. (Only used for taking advantage of switching incentives, but I'm going to close it within a few months anyway)
People can accidentally transfer money to your account and request it back. The bank has to ask you to do so.
People can attempt fraud on your account. You need to point it out to the bank, or you might get unauthorised overdraft charges, interest and such.
The T&Cs of the account can change, stating such that without a regular payment into the account, you'll get charged (I remember First Direct did this)
So always best to completely close any unused accounts so you can forget about them. If they are not open, people can't use them.0 -

I Agree. But my problem is, I keep getting palmed off by Halifax, saying I cant close such account in branch, I have to ring up *sigh*0 -
Who has mentioned a full service debit card?
I mentioned a "full service" card. The OP stated a need to buy train tickets. Last time I tried Electron did not work at ticket machines (and possibly even at counter). Anybody confirm that? And what about on-train?
However my "blue" Natwest/RBS visa debit card did work when tried at a ticket machine (but doesn't work at pay@pump). Anybody confirm that "blue" Natwest/RBS visa debits cards work on-train?0
