I'm going back to my local branch, for the third time tomorrow.
If they say that you need to do it by phone, ask them to let you use a phone in the branch and insist on a member of staff being present for the duration of the call.
Heads will roll if they tell me differently, again.
Stop talking nonsense though. You have a valid complaint. You should be able to walk away with a closed account and £25 in compensation. But "heads will roll"? No, they won't.
I'm fed up with the tax payer owned bank!
Oddly, they have a better service record than many other banks that have no taxpayer ownership. So this isn't relevant either.

Personally, I would just write a letter requesting that my account be closed, asking for the balance to be transferred to sort code xx-xx-xx, account number xxxxxxxx, confirming that I've destroyed my card, and asking them to confirm in writing that the account has been closed.

Just hand it in at the branch or put it through their letter box.

I mentioned a "full service" card. The OP stated a need to buy train tickets. Last time I tried Electron did not work at ticket machines (and possibly even at counter). Anybody confirm that? And what about on-train?

However my "blue" Natwest/RBS visa debit card did work when tried at a ticket machine (but doesn't work at pay@pump). Anybody confirm that "blue" Natwest/RBS visa debits cards work on-train?

No they do not work on a train...

2 pages so i can't be bothered to read replies in depth. I've read your OP, so on we go...

As i was scrolling down i saw a few comments saying you should leave it open.

IMO....ignore these people!! IF you want it closed then you want it closed & want help in closing it, end of. People telling you to leave it open aren't answering your question & therefore aren't helping you. They'll have a reply to this no doubt, but saying leave it open isn't helping.

As i shot on to page 2 to reply, i saw one post that was spot on. As ever it was from rb10...

This is all i've ever done ^^^ to close an account with Halifax & they always got shut down within 5 days. The postal address is on their website. PO Box something-or-other.

I'm writing to close down my account [sort code] - [account num] and i would like the balance paid to [sort code] - [account num] or to my address in cheque form, whichever your preference is.
I always included my postal address. Never had a problem.

Get the letter sent off & forget about it. Problem solved.

It depends on the train franchise. With me, First Capital Connect had to get a huge amount of complaints before they upgraded their payment systems both, the ticket machine and booth to accept Electron cards. This only came into action 4 months back in my area!

I would imagine they are both connected to a phone line to be able to seek authorisation now then.

However a ticket machine on a train would not be connected to such phone line.

15.3.4 If you have a card that displays the Visa Debit logo and starts
with the numbers 4751 27 or 4751 28, you will only be able to
use your card at a retailer or supplier of services where they
can authorise the transaction with us at the time of the
transaction being made. If this is not possible the transaction will
    be declined.

If I do leave it open, I'm just worried that I'll be charged an unarranged overdraft for not having enough in that account... Because the current account balance is £1 since July 11, I turn 18 in September, when I start getting charged for not having enough in an account or going overdrawn!

Doesn't make sense.. or have i missed something ?

i've had a few pence in the barclays account and a few quid in the RBS account for YEARS

    never been charged at all,
    HSBC (Main A/C)
    Halifax Back up A/C
    Lloyds (Spending) A/C
    RBS Back up A/C

Until they return in a few months time with another thread titled "lost bank card unable to get any money" it would always be advisable to have more than one bank account should any unforeseen circumstances arise.

I posted a closure letter to the Halifax on Monday, 2nd class post. On Friday I noticed the closure interest in account xxxxxxxx, dated Thu.

    What went wrong?:T
