Halifax keep palming me off every time I try close my account?!

I'm 17 and have an unused Cardcash account with them. I have £1 sitting in there since July 11 and it's been untouched. Went into my local branch to close it and they said I had to phone up to close the account. I did that. They turned around and said to me, twice that I have to go in branch to close that account. They advised me to also tell the cashier that to ring up H/O if she was to turn down my request.
All I want to do is close the account and I keep getting turned away. I'm getting fed up. I don't owe any money, I dont have an overdraft as I am too young to qualify for one. I expressed to them that I bank elsewhere because I needed a visa debit card rather than an electron card - (I buy train tickets every week to get into work, require me to use a debit card).
HOW can I close this account down?

I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
That said, I like to have "loose ends" sorted.
My understanding is that account closures can be handled in branch now. So I'd suggest going in to branch and, if the first member of staff is unable to help ask for the branch manager to organise the closure of your account.0 -

The way certain banks are, I want it out of the way because I'll be turning 18 soon. Wouldn't they charge an unarranged overdraft for me not having enough money in that account as I currently left it with £1??0 -
I had a old "Liquid Gold" account with Halifax / Leeds Permanent Building Society with a quid in it. Recently took it into The Halifax and they closed the account for me there and then. Don't be fobbed off ;-)0

They fobbed me off saying that "change of account closure policies, because it's a youth current account, you have to ring up and close the account." - utter rubbish! They just wanted me to leave because I came 10 minutes to closing!0 -
That's probably more likely, presumably they wanted to cash up and go. Usually they wont close the account on the phone anyway and want it in writing.0

I'm going back to my local branch, for the third time tomorrow. Heads will roll if they tell me differently, again. I'm fed up with the tax payer owned bank!0
