:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Whilst I like to take pride in what ever I do, it was insomnia, rather than dedication, that had me awake 4 hours after I went to bed. Hopefully I shall sleep well tonight as by time I felt tired again it was 5.45 and as the alarm goes off at 6.30 didn't seem much point in going back to bed :undecided0 -
Todays offerings
A long courgette, missed that one the other day, my first :j and so far only red tomato, it's a gardeners delight, a small hot red chilli (of which I have many) can't remember it's name but I've had it several years now, and my first cucumber from the 25p greenhouse homebase one:D, and I'm pleased to say it isn't bitter :j so must be an F1, will leave the others to grow to a better size now I know they're tasty. The runner bean was very close to snail corner so I picked it too.
And that is about as much energy as I can muster to garden for the reminder of the day.
In my sleep I'll do the weeding, never know it might help0 -
The sun and heat has done wonders for my crops, even my BNS cutting has put on loads of growth, too late mind but I can live in hope, but I must cut away some of the foliage on the toms to get some sun to them, or we'll be living on green chutney this winter.
My thornless blackberries are nearly ready and I'm really impressed as it was from the 99p store last year, hope they taste good too.
I was down at mums on the south coast yesterday and she has rooted every strawberry runner in the tub, so there are now 17 rooted plants in a 30" tub! I did wonder if the would survive in beach soil? with that many it's worth a try I think.
Not bothering with celery again, last one got muched :mad:0 -
My thornless blackberry finished fruiting over a month ago and I am now onto the spikey ones with the first picking this morning.
The family came over yesterday and mowed my lawn for me as a birthday treat and did quite a bit of pruning and weeding as well. I don`t recognise the place! I can now have my new gardener round to keep on top of things for me while I concentrate on the easy stuff.
I have been going through my seeds that are in a plastic box in the fridge and have found I won`t need to buy any more seed next year although I shall probably be tempted by some lovely pictures in the catalogues and be unable to restrain myself.0 -

Blimey! are mine late or are yours early?
Any pruning advice for them? or just prune as the same as spiky ones?
Had a few ordinary blackberries for a couple of weeks but I'd say another 2 weeks or so before the local brambles are really ready.0 -
I've butchered my triffid of a pepper plant. I noticed some new shoots right down at the base, so have lopped about 1.5 ft off it. No sooner did I do that, than I noticed some flowers on the bit I chopped off.

LV, we've all done something like that.
Shame it's not light yet I'm awake enough to potter about :mad:0 -

My thornless blackberry will also be another couple of weeks although I have had two very sharp ones. They need the sun to sweeten them. I cut the flowering branches down to the ground after I have picked all the blackberries and then tie in the new stems to the trellis, cutting off the ends when they reach the top. I try to keep it neat and tidy otherwise it takes over.0 -
Gosh it's quiet in here, all out enjoying your gardens I hope.
I've spent all day in mine, the jumble of tomato plants now sorted and several more red ones picked. I do have 2 plants with black patches on the stems, I'm hoping stem rot rather than blight as it has loads of sungold toms that may get a blush in a few days then I can at least pick them before binning the plant, so I'll keep a close eye on them.
Go my leeks planted at last but whilst my back was turned, bl**dy cat messed on the soil and dug some up:mad: so I've cleaned it up, and put chicken wire over them.
Picked more runners, spring onions, 5 strawberries, 3 summer raspberries, 1 long courgette and 2 massive round ones to go with the 3 I already have in my fridge and lots more chilies.
Off to find my courgettes recipes for dinner, that won't please hubby but he's not cooking0 -
Hi everyone,
Sorry I've been quiet, its been a combination of not much happening in the garden and being run off my feet with work. Luckily we had a dry day yesterday (a very rare treat recently) so got on with tidying the garden and pruning the wisteria which is a big job.
On the fruit and veg front things have been really bad this yearWe have a hand ful of blueberries on the 2 bushes (possibly due to transplant shock), raspberries were plentiful but no taste due to a lack of sunshine, blackberries are coming through this year for the first time (pound land stick!), pear trees either have none on or they are not healthy, apple tree is dropping lots that have fungus on them. All in all a bad year for fruit here.
Veg-disasterous! Potatoes have been about 1/3rd of the yield of last year. French beans I just can't get going. Broad beans were ok and the first year growing them. Runner beans are poor but have now got going but the slugs seem to have mounted a massive attack on them. Mange tout and peas were ok but needed lots more plants, have more growing again now, but again the slug patrol are lurking. Carrots are ok-I think. Cucumbers-well I started with 5 healthy ones and now appear to have one healthy plant left that has hurrah one fruit on it! Chillis-disaster this year. We have got red spider mite in the greenhouse and I found some small green caterpillars on my chillis yesterday too. So the worst affected plants have been thrown outand the whole place sprayed with a soap spray and wetted down. I will have to keep my eye on it. All caterpillars duly squashed! Tomatoes are poor this year-greenhouse have hardly done anything, outside cordons are worst than GH ones, but outside bush ones have done great and are laden down with fruits. So very mixed and I am very disheartned by it...so was going to plan for next year.
But we are currently booking a holiday for may to celebrate my dad's 60th, so will need to plan what I can plant with being away for 2 weeks in May!0
