My peas look like they're struggling. They're not very big. They are bearing fruits. How can I make sure the pods survive?
Even on my slug/snail eaten plants, I don't get the pods eaten, biggest danger is them eating through the stem.0 -
Hi everyone :j
Well...yesterday was dry, just one small shower but it was very brief. So took the opportunity and got out there for 8.30am and started in the veg plot-took all the red onions out but they hadn't done much. Took a few white onions out too. I've sown more mange tout and french beans-figure if they do something in the supposed indian summer it will be a bonus and if not then at least the beans will be a green manure.
Does look a little empty now:
But onions galore
Took a mini harvest for dinner too
But that was literally all of my peas and the plants had been ravaged by slugs and snails so took them out. Planted more peas but not sure if they will grow now.
Also took a couple of potatoe plants out-the ones that looked the most yellow/blotchy but the spuds look fine
I also harvested lots of raspberries and they were nice but could have been better-perhaps lack of sunlight to set sugars in them? Sorted out the suckers too and tied in the new canes I wanted to keep.
It was just so lovely to be able to get out in the garden, we were out there all day till 5pm. Got lots done but the garden is in quite a bad state from all of the rain, lots of things flattened and lots of things rotted off.
Oh talking of rotting-I moved my 5 cucumber plants out of the GH into the veg patch and one had rotted off when I got it out. The other 4 are huge with loads of flowers but I wouldn't be suprised if they die now they're outside but they had to come out to make room in the greenhouse. They were also wrapping theirselves onto my chillis and I can't have that.
Poor show for my chillis and peppers this year compared to last but did harvest a wenks hot yellow tonight-again think this needed more ripening but had some heat in it.
All in all a very nice weekend for gardening-shame we were stuck in the house saturday dismantling half the kitchen and knocking plaster off due to dampbut :T to the dry, warm, sunny day that was Sunday-back to rain and cold/grey today tho.

Annie123 thanks for that, I just skim them on my phone, really need to pay more attention clearly!
think it's a male, but I eagerly await some female flowers appearing. Don't know what variety it is as my mum gave me it after I killed my own, and she'd planted four types then lost the labels :rotfl: so hope it's something interesting!
Fay your onions look fab!! Glad you managed to get a whole day in the gardenit rained a bit here, par for the course really!

I've got blue sky :j so the brollys are off today, as am I.
Off to the coast to see mum and clear her front drive of sand and 20 years worth of overgrown shrubs and assorted other stuff. Didn't want hubby to get bored on his day off work
At least my garden will have a chance to dry out a bit as it would be nice to walk on the lawn without needing waders!
Fay that's 3x more peas than I had this year, so you've done well.0 -
I have sun! Sun I tell ya! That yellow shiny thing in the sky!
I expect it wont last as the sky looks overcast across the hills so no doubt it will be short lived.
I've been out hanging washing this morning and whilst I was there I told the toms to soak up as much as they can cos they may not get a second chance. :rotfl:Herman - MP for all!0 -
Well as I thought, the sun lasted maybe an hour and it's just dull now. Rain is threatening but it hasn't done more than a wee spit so far.
Just read we're supposed to be getting better weather next week, so fingers crossed it lasts for a wee while at least.
Being a generally impatient sort, I pulled some red onions that were flopped over but although they were formed, they were really quite small.
They go with the small potatoes I lifted from a bag whose foliage was looking rather tatty.
I really should have left well alone.
Not to worry, we need to reduce our portion size in this house anyway. :rotfl:
Todays Strawb harvest. Only 6 of them but put in a tiny dish to make them look plentiful. :rotfl:Herman - MP for all!0 -

Well, we can look after ourselves and maybe mount a takeover. While the cat's away and all that.:cool:I'll back you up john.......I've always fancied myself as a bit of a renegade.Little_Vics wrote: »I'm in - bring on the revolution!

OI! I can read, you know!
You turn your back for 5 minutes and all hell breaks loose. I ask you, where's the gratitude eh? Well? Eh? <mutter> <grumble>If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

I tried my best, but you just can't get good quality virtual friends these days I'm afraid. Could put them in detention and get them to do some double digging
It was a lovely sunny day at the coast, hubby found the concrete drive under 8"-12" of sandy soil and grass  but at least we can get a car parked on it now. Cut back part of a 15' tall shrub of some sorts, shredded the smaller bits and the rest to the dump/recycling centre, it's much nicer than my local one.
This one sells soil conditioner 40l @ £3, but mums garden is a long way off needing that yet.
I do need a good strimmer for the sand dune grass, looked at homebase website and none of the reviews are brilliant, any recommendations?
Neighbour said it was lovely this morning here but clouds came in mid afternoon but stayed dry, so hopefully a bit dryer by time I get out there tomorrow evening.
Ali, that's a great looking plate of food and spuds taste nicest when they're small;) well done.0
