MBE-I'm sure it was you who advised that the galina often form fruits on the side shoots-way back in this thread when I first said I was growing the galina. But if it wasn't you then thank you to whoever it was because they do indeed have flowers/fruit trusses on them!

I don't think it was me. :p As far as I understand it, all tomato plants will flower on the side shoots. However, if you leave them to grow then you end up with a jungle, and some say that the plant puts too much energy into growing green stuff and not enough into fruiting. Supposedly you will get more fruit if you take the side shoots off vine-type tomatoes, although this doesn't apply to bush types.

Vine / bush - I never know which is which so they all get treated the same. :o

    [QUOTE=Fay;53909495

My runners were left in the greenhouse for far too long and seem really thin and spindly to me-the resident slug population has also started attacking them.

you've still time to resow these. do these indoors as they'll stand a better chance than outside, with all this rain we're getting.

The nemotodes should be here soon and I've ordered copper rings this morning-I will prevent them eating my plants
I planted petunia seeds this year (grew really well last year) but these were a fancy one from a new range (can't remember the name) and only 6 came up. I planted 4 our last week and now have 4 stumps :( The other two are in the green house and I am going to pot them on and then put them out with copper round them

if your plants are in pots, put vaseline around the lip of the pot and then a coating of salt. this would prevent the slithery blighters going near your lovingly tended babies! of course, you'd have to redo this every so often, esp. if it keeps raining all the time!

Dogstarheaven-some pics for us all to look at?([/QUOTE]errmm.. recently turned singleton, and am absolutely rubbish with IT stuff, so i have only myself to work out any technical conundrums (avoidance technique works!). i don't have a decent camera on the phone (old blackberry), so it's not really poss. just yet. i've got my DD coming up soon, so I'll ask her to borrow her swanky camera -hope you can wait!

I wouldn't put salt anywhere near any plants, it will just dissolve in the rain and poison any nearby soil, so nothing will grow.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

I've got a big bag of road salt that I use to kill off things growing in the patio. :D

I like bugs. I guess it's a boy thing, but I really do like them.

Look at these lovely little shield bugs that were hatching out yesterday:

However, I think that this one's pushing it a bit, even for me:

That was clattering around inside my little greenhouse. It's flippin' enormous and I don't mind saying that it's freaking me out a bit.

I think it's some sort of wasp. I'll let you know when I find out. :p

    Rhyssa persuasoria, the Giant Ichneumon.

Either it found its way out again, or the sarracenia ate it. :D

  • Drea to get things into balance three of my pepper plants are just dead sticks today!

MBE - I am in love ...........with your garden! How do you keep everything so neat and tidy? A friend came over today and started hacking a path through my three foot high lawn so that I can get to my compost bins - yes really it is as bad as that. Fortunately I have quite a large patio to place my various tubs on plus a couple of patiogrows with mainly strawberries and a few bits of salady stuff in at the moment.

Sorry I can`t do pictures - have to get my daughter to transfer them onto my computer for me when she comes over and that is as far as technology allows me to go. Enjoying everyone elses pictures though.

Have been following you for years MBE and was in hysterics over your cookery thread a few years back.

Easy. I only photograph the good bits. ;)

Which one? I think I've got the hang of cooking now, so it's just the gardening to sort. :D
