My broad beans, sowed March, are flowering, early spuds should be ready to sample at the weekend, cabbage seedlings are growing well, as are squash, although half are still in pots, and the runner beans are nearly all up now. I have baby goosegogs and jostaberries too.
The gooseberry cuttings I took last autumn are growing well and I want to grow them on a 'leg'. Not as tall as standard bushes, but enough to raise them off the ground. What do I do? Just keep rubbing off the lower leaves and buds to stop them growing outwards, or is there more to it than that?If I'm over the hill, where was the top?0 -
Are you up a hill in Scotland, Aliasojo? My weekend forecast is for a low of 5 degrees on Friday, then 7 degrees Sat & Sun
We're kinda in-between hills. When we moved here, the LL told us that this was a particularly rainy spot because of being in a bit of a valley. He neglected to mention the intense heat and seriously rapidly changing weather.
I climbed a hill the other day (completely off topic but I was proud of myself for making it to the top.) :rotfl:
Edit: I've just been checking the BBC Weather site and it gives temps of 8 degrees for both nights at 4am. That's too much of a difference, there must be something wrong somewhere.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Latest pics:
I have flowers on all 7 of my strawberry runners now
Parent strawberry plant which seems to have been rejuvenated since I took the runners off ~ really does need moving but not sure if it's too late now??
Raspberry plant ~ nuff said
My solitary nasturtium ~ I love it & don't really want to plant it outside but I know I have to

Everyone seems to have been busy ~ I haven't managed to plant anything else yet 'A watched potato will never chit'...0 -
Don't give up on that raspberry. Keep watering it just in case there's something going on underground. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

But get rid of that Dandelion from the second picture before all those seeds land around your garden.0

I know it does look really dry in that pic but it's just the surface soil, underneath it's wet, honest!!Will pay more attention to it though.

Hello - I`m a first timer here and would love to join in if I may. I have been reading for years but not had the courage to post before.
As you can probably tell by my user name I am a bit older than you folk here and find it really lovely reading about things we used to do in wartime Britain when we were `Digging for Victory`0 -

My DD is doing WW2 stuff at school atm and is starting to appreciate the stuff I grow at home. Starting to, Rome wasn't built in a day etc :rotfl:
I've often wondered, the wartime posters and growing guides told all about how to grow the basic stuff, but gave no indication of the pests you would encounter.
This seems a major failing and I wonder what the result was?Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

My pumpkin seeds have been dispatched to pumpkin heaven although I did buy a mini one in the garden centre now there are two plants in it, I have potted it on but cannot separate them any tips? I really don't want to have to wave buy buy to them too
We painted the fence, weeded (a bit) painted the garden furniture, apart from two hideous shrubs that OH has promised to dig up my garden is looking quite nice for the first time in years .... how do I post a picture?
My nectarine tree has curl leaf, it is on every leaf so I think that will have to go where the pumpkins wentI also killed a few sunflower seeds, where in greenhouse and sun got to them

 Which war?
I've got a Dig for Victory poster on my wall above the PC. I'm only a kid at 43, but I'm sure I've inherited a wartime mentality from somewhere. Grow as much as I can, waste nothing. :money:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0
