  • Thanks for the article link GinghamR..... I would say the STANDOUT phrase in the article would be from a chemistry professor stating that
“You have to heat amber to over 200degC in order to be able to get any volatiles out of it, so I find that quite unlikely.”

Says alot. How hot ARE your babies?????

My children wore theirs 24/7 (apart from bath time)

I am happy using it. It seems/seemed to work for my children so I continue to use on on my youngest. I am aware that some people will not be happy using them, and they won't work for everyone's children.

As with so many things, you have to go with what you personally think is best.
Everyone is entitled to disagree and dislike things, but I think we must remember to be respectful in the way we say that we disagree/dislike. (I seem to say this a lot on here, I'm beginning to think I am in the wrong place if I'm honest :( )

But you're happy to give him the (apparently) whatever comes out of the amber to get it to work?
    That doesn't make any sense.

    .

Eh???? This doesn't make sense LOL!!! Yes I am happy to give my child a NATURAL remedy as long as it works, and as far as i'm concerned it does work. As I have said I will give him calpol on the rare occasion that he needs it but I am not happy giving him a pain killer day in day out!

And seriously to those who think I would purposely endanger my child.........well actually I have no words!

Like I said before natural remedies when being discussed will bring people out of the woodwork to protest how bad they are and how they are just hocus pocus, fine don't use them but for gods sake stop slating people who do!

I appreciate that. But if you have to take it off when the baby goes down for a nap for example, when something soothing is most helpful, surely they're of limited value, even if they did have proven benefits? And leaving it on during unsupervised time, when the baby could trap her little fist in it or worse? And a baby able to snap the thread it's on could swallow it...

    Just too risky. Sorry.

My DD has her amber necklace around her neck when she is awake during the day and at bedtime it is wrapped around her ankle in her sleepsuit.

Each to their own, but I believe that the necklace has worked for us. DD is 10 months old and has 4 teeth, and I only knew the teeth were there because I saw them. Apart from some rosy cheeks, she hardly ever displayed the other teething symptoms. I very rarely have to give Calpol, and when I do it has been for a cold - not teething.

I was v sceptical and I also think they are a bit ugly but my daughter was teething terribly and I didn't want to give calpol and gels night after night. I bought a teething anklet, worn under her babygrow/trousers/tights so no way she can get hold of it and honestly within hours the difference was apparent.

Maybe it's a placebo, so what? It works for us.

  • Teething necklaces are one of those things that many people just cant believe they work, you have to try them out first to believe them.

Teething does clear up by itself, most of the time medicine is not needed.

Yes it does clear up by itself, but in our case we get 2 weeks of virtually no sleep at all and a horribly, grizzly, clingy baby per tooth. That can't be good for any of us. We only have 4 teeth through, and I'm dreading the rest of them due to the complete lack of sleep. I'm reaching the point of trying anything just to give him some relief from his obvious pain and all of us some much needed sleep. He'll sit and cry in pain sometimes, and the Anbesol and Bonjela only help for a limited time. I'm also needing a break from him biting my feet (he chomps on whatever is closest to his mouth, and if he's crawling around, my feet are an easy target)

I wish that I had known about these necklaces when my DD was little. She had terrible troubles. I only heard about them about a year ago when my neighbour got one for her baby girl. Honestly that girl was in awful pain, grizzly, red and dribbly for weeks on end. Hours after the amber was put on she was like a different child.
It's something to do with the oils and the resins rubbing against the skin I believe.
It's easy to dismiss but it's like gold and copper being used to help arthritis. It works and they even give gold injections at times.

If it's any help, I found the first 4 teeth to the be the absolute worst for both of my kids - the other teeth were miles less troublesome. Sympathies and hope you get some sleep soon! x

I agree that it is each to their own etc..... BUT i notice nobody has responded to the article that GinghamR posted and in particular responded to the point i highlighted. If science tells us without doubt that unless a substance (in this case Amber) is heated to a particular temperature (in this case 200 degrees C) then no volatiles will come out, HOW can it be feasible within the laws of nature that when you pop an amber bracelet onto your child whose temp will be no more than about 37 degrees C that "oils" or anything else will come out and therefore produce an analgesic effect......

Anyone? Don't get me wrong, i can understand wanting to clutch at straws and i am all for trying anything once but for me, the science wins out here ;)
