Aldi snobbery

I tempted to try Aldi and Lidl but not sure if it is worth my while on the amount I spend V an hour+ round trip. Also I might not be able to complete my list in either store without having to top up elsewhere.
I don't care if I am seen in any shop.
I do go to both stores occasionally for homewares / electronics etc. deals. I am on their email lists which keeps me in the loop.0 -
Hmm, I keep meaning to take a trip and see what the closest Aldi and Lidl are like - but they are both a few miles away in an area I don't know, while there is a giant Tesco on the way home from work... Just need a day when I am not too exhausted after work to drive off in the opposite direction and explore!Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

There are some people (who like to keep up with the proverbial Jones) I work with who wouldnt be seen dead in the local lidl, Aldi stores.
However, since the credit crunch belst have had to be tightened, sooo
They now drive into the next county which has opened an Aldi store and use that so as not to be seen.

Priceless
I drive to the next county to Lidl but only because there isn't one closer, it's a 20 mile round trip so can't go very often. Aldi has not long opened in my nearest town but that's a 12 mile round trip so still not really cost effective if for no other reason that when I go there I spend too much! Fortunately we have a Mr M in my small town, (and a Mr T extra on the bypass but I refuse to shop there). If that was the only choice I'd much rather drive to Aldi or Lidl.
Re bags, I've got Mr A, Mr S, Mr M etc. I keep them in the boot, stored in an Intermarche (French hypermarket) bag rather than using it to put shopping in cos I don't want people to think I'm a snob!! :rotfl:0 -

I use Intermarche ones because they're really strong. Hope no-one thinks I'm a snob because of them.******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0 -
Love, love, love Aldi! I have ever since we were introduced to it by our German friends, back when I was a kid in the 90's.
Years later and with a partner and kiddy of my own, we are now massive Aldi converts and do our weekly shop in there. We have a Lidl at the end of our road which we use quite frequently but more for top-up items (and their Californian Zinfandel wine - pure bliss!).
I cannot fault Aldi, I don't think there is anything I don't like. I have a friend who is massively snobby and only shops at Tesco and she wouldn't dream of shopping anywhere else. Yet I also cringe when she mentions that they are massively "struggling" and "skint" having a toddler and a new baby, and often want to say to her... "well, don't shop at Tesco, then", but I just can't bring myself to.
Like another poster, we have used the Aldi (and Lidl) nappies and pull-ups and not only were they rated Gold award by one of the mother and baby mags, but we genuinely found them to be the best. Best price and best quality.
We spend around £50 on a weekly shop for the 2.5 of us, and prior to baby when we used to go between Asda and Tesco several times a week for "bits" and get a basket worth of shopping; we could easily spend £20-30 per basket, and that was several times a week!!! Makes me sick when I think how frivolous we used to be yet smug at how savvy we now are.
Sorry... further ETA, we also take our Aldi re-useable bags EVERY week without fail, and we were never like that when we used to shop at Asda/Tesco. You just get so complacent that you will be given bags. Now, we don't even think and reach for them automatically when we leave to go shopping.0 -
I've boycotted Aldi for now -pity but I had a dizzy "turn" in there. The customers were great-offering to put my shopping onto the belt . I asked a staff member if someone could get me a glass of water -I was really unwell-She told me she was far too busy as she had to go and open a till !!!!
The manager did speak to her and I heard her say "What ? I should have got her water BEFORE opening my till? For God's sake"" I then went through her till-if looks could have killed I'd have dropped dead....and her parting shot to me (the manager was waiting for me complaint form in hand) Bloddy well complain about me -I don't care". Such a shame as the rest of the staff there (Gillingham) are lovely and she lets them ALL down.
So back to Tesco for me until they get rid of her-she's diabolical.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Despite what people say I don't find Aldi a pleasant place to shop. I get in and out as soon as possible.
But the staff certainly earn their money. They are the fastest checkout operators in the west! And the ones on the shop floor always seem to be whizzing around.
I get my fruit and and veg cheaper from a local farm shop so I go to Aldi for specific items - like tinned toms and butter (both are excellent for the price). They also have free range chicken which is cheaper than elsewhere. My thermals came from there too!0 -
My local Aldi and Lidl stores are the other side of town so I'd need to use taxis (that would do away with saving money). However Morrisons is literally a five minute walk away and I like it a lot. I go towards tea time when a lot of stuff is being reduced in priceDebt-Free as of 12th September 2017
