We have Aldi and Lidl nearby, I prefer the Aldi store as the staff are more friendly, it's cleaner etc. Both are noticeably busier these days but it is still much quicker to zip round Aldi rather than trek round the aisles and aisles of crap in Tesco. I stood like a lemon gaping at Tescos oh so amazing offers on fruit and veg £4 for 2 on soft fruit (wow, i'll stick with my 99p blueberries from Aldi shall I?) £1 tomatoes! 39p at Aldi the other week...celery £1! 39p again..

I use Cath Kidston bags, lol, and a selection of plastic / jute bags. Dp grumbled the other day as just the bright CK ones in the car when he went pmsl :D

Re bags, I've got Mr A, Mr S, Mr M etc. I keep them in the boot, stored in an Intermarche (French hypermarket) bag rather than using it to put shopping in cos I don't want people to think I'm a snob!! :rotfl:

We have two Aldis-one localish, one on the other side of town.

I've seen more people from my slightly snooty suburb in the Aldi on the far side of town (that I don't go into often) than in the local one-where I shop regularly.:rotfl:

But I have an enormous orange Le Creuset bag for life. and another from Ka De We (swanky department store in Berlin). Do I win the (slightly sad) snobby bag prize??? I didn't pay for either of them. Honest.:D

If it's a bag competition I have one from Ralph's in Palm Springs, California - do I win? :D I did buy it though. I love buying bags when I'm on holiday, they are cheap and light holiday souvenirs. Lightens up the shopping experience by remembering where you bought it. I have Albert Hein (Holland), loads from Carrefour (France), Auchan (france), Globus (Germany), E Leclerc (France) and Ralphs. Strangley, I don't have an Intermarche one!;)

Our Aldi is getting busier and busier, sometimes you have to wait for a car park space. I particularly like their cereal, biscuits, chocolate, continental meat, wine and beer. And flowers.

The only shop i am a bit snobbish about is Asd@. I absolutely hate it - pile it high and flog it cheap. Aisles and aisles of pot noodles, crisps and booze.

I am off to MrS in a mo as I have £12 off £60 voucher. I will go via the farm shop for the veg. I buy my meat at the butchers - it isn't cheaper but it is much nicer.
I wanna be in the room where it happens

Hilarious. Round our way it's the ones with the most money who are most likely to be shopping at Aldi and Lidl - they have more than enough to care a jot about what other people think. Oddly, it's the ones with the most and the ones with the least who shop there. The ones without a lot of spare cash shop there because they know it offers the best value, and the loaded ones shop there for the same reason.

It's the ones about a third of the way up the income scale who seem to have the biggest problem with it. They can afford to shop at Tesco and seem for some bizarre reason to think it's smarter to be seen there than at Aldi.

    Poor deluded fools. :)

We haven't an aldi near us but I go to lidls.

I'm quite short and like the fact I can reach everything I can see, and you can buy quality stuff at a decent price.

But I have major issues with the check out proceedure, it's seriously intimidating. Why do they only issue a mammoth size trolley? And then only give you a tiny space to pack your shopping in? I don't get it!

    From the article in question:
'Another onlooker, who did want to be named, said: “I was driving past and I was going into Aldi I thought I’d see what was going on.'

    Local journalism at it's best!

Ha! I just posted this on another thread, but was wondering why the passer by did not want to be named, was it because they were going to Aldi perhaps?

They now drive into the next county which has opened an Aldi store and use that so as not to be seen.

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    Priceless
Surely a hat and dark glasses would be the more MSE option.

I've boycotted Aldi for now -pity but I had a dizzy "turn" in there. The customers were great-offering to put my shopping onto the belt . I asked a staff member if someone could get me a glass of water -I was really unwell-She told me she was far too busy as she had to go and open a till !!!!
You're thread made me think - ok you could have done with some water by why did it have to be the SA who had to get it for you, making all shoppers wait in the process. Why didn't you just ask your helpful fellow shoppers to pull a small bottle off the shelf?

Your "turn" did not, and should not have interfered with business. I'm inclined to agree with the reasoning of the SA, but not the attitude.

I shop at Aldi and I am proud of that - even though I use the one 4 min walk from work - even popped in a lunchtime.

Always bumping into colleagues and customers there. The latter that recognise me ask me what am I doing in here. and we laugh and I say 'can you buy celery for 49p at my work?'

Even we discuss Aldi products at work with other colleagues and customers (naughty I know)

Within 4 miles of here, I have 2 other Aldis I can go to.
  • I am a long time Aldi shopper and love it. It is very noticeable how much busier it is now and the type of cars that park in there. It does not bother me what people think . We eat like Kings for a fraction of the cost and what is saved is put towards holidays and days out. You can nip in and out quickly as a smaller store - lifes too short to spend hours in the supermarket. The staff are excellent too - much better than staff in Asda and Tesco IMO.

If I am a snob it is probably Asda too ! I think the store is full of rubbish food and the people that go in there are rude and miserable !
