Im getting ready for easter as I want to decorate some bits and really have fun with the kids now that DS2 can have chocolate. We have a huge green area behind us with the ruins of an old abbey-I was thinking of doing a hunt out there.
The thing is,my mum always made our easter eggs and Id like to do the same-but I need at least 80% cocoa to keep it stable when it hits room temp. But of course if its going to be cheaper to do buy the eggs then thats what I'll do-ideally Id like a mix.
Has anyone seen any easter offers yet?0 -
Scones
Heat oven to 220 or gas 7
50g Butter
250g Self raising flour
1/2 Teaspoon salt
50g Sugar
100 ml Buttermilk, natural yogurt ( or milk with a squirt of lemon juice to curd, do this the night before:))
1 Egg
You can add sultanas, glace' cherries, cheese ( don't use sugar if you use cheese), treacle 1 tablespoon ( use a little less sugar with treacle) or fresh fruit like blueberries.
Sieve flour rub in butter with cold hands (wash under cold tap)
Add salt & sugar, then beaten egg & butter milk.
Bind together, flour hands and roll into balls then flatten a little as you put them on a buttered tray.

I cant be bothered faffing about with cutters and rolling pins, you can make these in minutes.
Yummy cake
Heat oven 180 not sure what gas equivalent is.
One and a half cups of castor sugar ( sorry didn't weigh it when I made this the other day).
8 oz of butter and cream cheese half and half is good but you can use more cream cheese up to about 3/4
Cream these together, then and 3 beaten eggs.
One and a half cups of self raising flour (Sieved) add 1/3rd at a time.
Butter tin.
Variations...
If you want chocolate cake replace 1/2 cup of flour with cocoa powder, you can use hot chocolate but use about a bit less sugar as there is sugar in the hot chocolate.

Hi Polkadot, not sure how much chocolate you need but green&blacks has 5 bars of 500g at about £9.50 on the rainforest. It's 85% cocoa. Although Mr W normally have offers on for 2 for £3 if I remember correctly, I always buy it for the OH when it is. Not sure if it's any good for cooking though.Diary: Getting back on track for 2013 and beyondDEBT FREE 13-10-13 :dance::dance::dance::dance:

hi everyone, I think I am a little stuck on this second purse challenge. So far we have bought the 5x 9 packs of andrex toilet rolls for £9.50 off rainforest last month but as far as bargains go that is all I can find. We were going to get the cathedral cheese which was half price at £2 but we saw own brand mild at 30p more and none of us are overly keen on really cheesy cheese. The only other thing we have bought is Nescafe 500g tub for £8.20 discounted at MrA from £12.something, although I don't consider it that much of a bargain when it used to be £4 for the 300g jars but we get through loads so maybe we do need to stock up.
Is it me not finding anything that is really bargainous or am I possibly missing something? Everyone has done so well this month and so far my second purse is empty as the toilet rolls haven't even arrived yet lolComping wishlist for 2017

I had a PM recently about making butter, I noticed my post had been lost when it got merged with other posts, I thought you all might want to see it given the price of butter, so keep your eyes peeled for reduced cream.
HOW TO MAKE BUTTER
I made 5 batches of butter from 5 x 600 ml tubs of Double Cream I got reduced for 20p each. 4KG butter and 1 Litre of Buttermilk £1
It took approximately 10 min to make each batch. One tub at a time.
Add a little salt if you like salted butter.
Whip the cream until it peaks , place the whipped cream in a tupperware tub, it works best if the cream half fills the container, (one with a tight fitting lid).
Now all you do is shunt the container from one hand to the other, moving the contents from side to side as you go, after a while the butter begins to form and it releases the buttermilk. Open the container and have a wee taste, if its too soft , shunt it a little more, pour off the buttermilk into a container, put the butter into a bowl of cold water and gently squeeze to release as much of the buttermilk as possible, change the water a few times until it is clear. Transfer the butter onto a board and shape to fit the container your storing it in, then turn the board over and pop in the butter in the fridge. I used the ones from Home Bargains 5 for 79p.
From the 5 x 600 ml tubs I also got 1 Litre of buttermilk, which I froze most of for making scones.
I made a batch of scones using the first lot of butter I made with some of the buttermilk, absolutely yummy!
Easy to make, great fun! And ... You can freeze it.
If anyone wants the scone recipe I'd be happy to post it.
You don't often see reduced butter, but you can always find reduced cream.

I think we must all be on the same wavelength - I tried making butter on Friday got a reduced carton of double cream and tried in the Vitamix but I got the speeds all wrong and just ended up with an emulsified goo - I think I could have possible rescued it but I thought it smelled funny. I found another tub of reduced cream on the Friday night so I gave the butter making another go yesterday using my electric hand whisk I took the cream out of the fridge and let us warm up a little then just whisked it only took a couple of minutes and it is delicious.
My daughter and I were going to bake this afternoon but ended up with a massive chocolate cake whoopsied from MrA so we have postponed our baking till tomorrow0 -
Popped into Mr-I to stock up on the Crunchy nuts that I mentioned yesterday and saw that they also have PG tips teabags on offer - £3.50 for 240 teabags - I don't know how long offers last at Mr-I0

Hi Savvybunny - I think it was Mothership that gave some good advice a couple of days ago (can't remember the number of the post though and apologies if it was someone else) and suggested making a list of the items you buy regularly then you can keep an eye out for those specific bargains or can check on my supermarket for where they are cheaper - Kerri has a fab link to a spreadsheet of offers (first page) - I tend to post things if I see something - my latest purchases are teabags and cereals and probably have enough to last the next 3 months
Hope this helps a little0
