Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

I still have a Lidl glass bottle from before they changed suppliers and it turns cloudy half-way up in the bottle in winter temperatures in my kitchen. None of the new ones do and this might be a sign of a blend with oil of inferior quality. It now does say blended but it is still sold as extra virgin - dubious tbh. ...
The new stuff in the plastic bottles (Solesta I think) is not as good as the old Primadonna in the glass bottles, definitely not "proper" olive oil because it spits in a very nasty way when you fry eggs in it:(0 -
A group of shoppers in Lidl this morning were discussing the boxed oranges, someone counted them 10 for £2.19. Same thing in nets 10 for £1.10.0

Had a couple of bottles of Aldi Weisbier at the weekend (wheatbeer for those who are not sure) and it was really nice stuff - for £1.25 a bottle.
If you buy it, then chill it down in the freezer - but don't let the second bottle freeze like I did:o
It defrosted by the time Match of the day came on:D
My favourite summer tipple! I'm glad someone else appreciates it, lol. Tesco was selling it for the same price 10 years ago, £ 1.79 now!First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0 -

Change of brand name in our store (Kania now Batts), contents and bottle look the same, ingredients listed are the same.First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0 -
I normally love Aldi's topside joints of beef (tasty and moist), but the one I bought last week had a topside label on the front and cooking instructions for brisket on the back.
I chose to use the usual times for topside, but the joint unravelled in the oven, exposing a thick layer of gristle along it's full length, which meant a lot of waste.
I took the packaging and the wasted parts along to the local store (I had to use the rest of the joint as I had no alternative meat) intending to point out that the meat may have been mislabelled (ie was actually brisket).
To my surprise and delight, the manager gave a full refund. Good customer service.0 -
Reminds me Teddysmum, when I took back the ''large hole' in a loaf that I bought from Tesco. No actual bread no crusts....just the cut out hole.0

Olive oil and EV stuff in particular isn't designed for frying, any good EV oil will split if you try frying with it. Use the 89p veg oil.0 -
or sunflower oil - I like the Aldi one as you really cant taste the oil. I don't understand why people use Olive oil for ordinary frying. its expensive and really doesn't give better results than sunflower or vegetable oil.0

Yes they will and EV olive oil should only ever be used as a dressing. But NEVER an excuse to use evil blended vegetable oil.
But, why are people still frying eggs in oil?? It's totally unnecessary in modern pans. I've dry-fried my eggs for the past two decades now. And if you food from a proper cafe then they are almost dried Freud "a la roadside greasy cafe" :rotfl::rotfl:0
