And yet, I'm sure the Lidl's Ketchup won the public tasting in the Greg Wallace "Eat your chips for less" programme.

I was a die hard Heinz tomato ketchup fan. Don't have it often, only on chip shop fish 'n' chips, but since trying Bramwell's from Aldi I'll never buy Heinz again. So a big thumbs up from me!

Bramwells used to be great a few years ago, but then they changed the recipe, and personally I think it's now truly awful!

Can't agree, I'm afraid. I'm with the Guardian review above - better than Heinz at a fraction of the price.

I have to say I think it's awful too. Our favourite is the Asda Smartprice one, even cheaper than the Aldi or Lidl versions too.

Lidl Kania tomato ketchup, 55p, 565g

Full marks for having a pull-tab on the interior seal (rather than requiring you to stab it with a knife or pick at it with your fingernails), but that is where the innovation ends. This is 72% concentrated tomato puree and it tastes like it: thickly mushy in texture and rather stolidly tomatoey in its flavour. Yes, it is sweet and, yes, it has a certain vinegary, slightly spicy edge, but there is no compelling variegated depth in its seasoning. Is it terrible? No. Would it bring vivid colour to a meal? No. 5/10[/I][/SIZE]
I get through a lot of these, I find the product perfectly acceptable! Maybe it's the tang I like? Always buy in bulk when on 1/2 price offer though.

Honestly, I don't notice any real difference between the brands - but then I'm not sufficiently bothered about comparing and contrasting when I'm chomping down cheese on toast :D

You make me wonder if they've reverted back to the original recipe? I'm not sure I can bring myself to buy a bottle to find out, I threw the last one away!

FWIW here's the thread I started when the recipe changed:

I'm enjoying the mince pies, pistachios and all the nuts you can buy near the checkout atm.

My oh so straight up SIL decants Aldi and Lidl ketchup, mayo and lots of other non branded products into the branded bottles and jars, tea caddy, coffee jars and so on.

She has told guests AFTER they have used them, long after the meal is over and the look on people's faces is hilarious. I'm in the loop so I enjoy the reaction! She does it for fun. But everyone knows now, so no more need.

I don't bother decanting anything, what you see is what you get.
