  • The secrets of Aldi...

I am hoping that secret is that it is full of delicious treats that we must avoid yet we still buy ? :D

For me, the secret of Aldi is:

Ignore the whacky brand names - they are all Aldi own-brands, bar one or two. Just try them, if you don't like them, don't buy them again.

I agree. I've been shopping in Aldi quite a bit recently all own brands and I'm yet to find anything I don't like.

Any thoughts on the Aldi Christmas ad (on the website). Seems well up there with the Waitrose one to me. :)

Has anyone tried these from Aldi? Reviews?
Eta: bought some now, am waiting to share with friends before giving a verdict.

Hope you're not going to be sharing them with Jilly Goolden - she gave the G&T crisps a rating of 1/10 in this taste test article:
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3307899/Prosecco-crisps-taste-worse-Irn-Bru-posh-crisp-flavours-exotic-ask-expert-test-live-claims.html

In the same article, she guessed Aldi Camembert and Caramelised Onion crisps as Pina Colada flavour! I suspect her taste buds are not quite the same as everyone else's, so enjoy your crisps, VfM4meplse! ;)

  • Their shredded wheat is great, probably the cheapest kind you can get too! You get 16 biscuits in a box for 0,89p. I think Asda reduced the branded stuff recently, it's 2£ for 30 biscuits at the moment? Their dry-roasted peanuts are great too, they're selling the big packs now for 2£ or something.

Can't really go wrong with this kind of stuff, there's nothing to them, there's not going to be much of a taste or texture difference compared to the branded stuff. And then they go downhill with other stuff. I tried their Alpenmark bratwurst a few month ago and they were probably the worst sausages I've ever tried, though I think they were supposed to be BBQ'd rather than fried x(. I've tried their wafer-cut ham too, the Italian stuff, pretty sure it had mucus forming in the bottom. Kind of killed my appetite for ham completely... sorry Aldi

The last thing I ever got from Lidl was a bag full of croissants. They were dry but dirt cheap (can't remember the price), couldn't argue with it I remember getting more than I paid for. I remember their jaffa cakes and muesli bars being pretty decent for the price too.

The only thing I really hate about Aldi are the counters... it's almost like they're rushing you along, they cram everything onto that tiny counter top and you've barely got the time to pack everything away before they're passing the next customer's stuff through and piling it into the same tiny space
