Oh dear, normally I sing Aldi's praises, esp the meat. However yesterday I bought a small fresh chicken ready for my visitors arriving tomorrow for the week so we can have salad and sandwiches during their stay. Cooking it now and instead of the usual gorgeous roast chicken smell pervading the house I don't really know how to describe it. Wet dog maybe? It's awful. The chicken isn't completely cooked yet and it looks pretty normal, but I think it's egg mayo sandwiches (my own bantam eggs) for the next week. Not sure what to do. It was £3 or thereabouts which is quite a lot of money for me. I can't go back to Aldi with a cooked and prodded chicken in a bag can I? Anyway, I won't get the chance with visitors. The wrapper in the bin says Aug 14th so it should've been fine. Such a disappointment.

Huge improvements have been made in my local store recently. A whole bank of wall chillers have been installed half the length of the shop to accommodate extra fruit, veg and salad items. This has also freed up space in the back wall chiller cabinet for more meat, fish and poultry.

I've also noticed the air con has been running much colder too during this hot weather, presumably to deal with the problem of fresh food being out of the store room chiller whilst being shelf-stacked. The milk is brought straight out of the back chiller in the cages and pushed straight into the shop chiller area so isn't sat around getting warm so not sure why people are complaining about that. I've certainly never had any complaints nor have any of my family/friends.

You've got me worried now so I've just checked the chicken I bought last Thursday (dated 14th) as I'm cooking it for dinner tonight and thankfully it smells absolutely fine :T

  • Any recommendations for washing powder/conditioner?? I have 2 small children who get really grubby & I spend a fortune on washing tablets elsewhere, need something that is effective!

I use the Allmat powder (it's designed to look like Bold 2-in-1) and I have no complaints whatsoever. It doesn't give the clothes much of a smell, so I put some Comfort in too to give it a fresh scent :-)

I find the powder doesn't dissolve completly in a cold wash and black school clothes and white streaks don't agree so well with my teens - so I'm dissolving it before the wash in half a bucket of hot water. Seems to do the trick.
I think the Almat smell is nice but never have been one for additional fresheners ;)
