Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

It isn't just the quality of the liquid that is good - the bottle nozzle is excellent in that it is a narrow gauge. You can squeeze without accidentally emptying half the bottle in the basin. (Aldi)0 -

Really? I've had almost all the different types and no issues with any of them. The low fat Greek style natural is really nice, as are the individual low fat Greek fruit yogurts. (Lidl individual full-fat Greek yogurts are nicer, but unfortunately c.200 cals for a small pot).
I suspect the 6x fruit yogurts at 95p are made to a price, but are perfectly palatable.
Both Aldi & Lidl have gone to great lengths to get awards, but the Which Best Supermarket award (Aldi) must have done a significant amount to attract posher shoppers.
Best buy: Aldi Danish Blue cheese - 99p0 -

Why?
To fool people's subconcious that they are seemingly getting a trusted brand of excellent quality.......
Happily, Weetabix isn't owned by Nestle. Curious, though, that you'd see Nestle as a 'trusted brand'.
I'd see it more as a seriously tainted brand that's best avoided (just as Nestle avoid UK taxes):

It's the flavoured Greek style ones - 4 for 99p are the worst ones for me. Don't taste like the Muller stuff. Know of three Aldi converts and they all like me not impressed with Aldi's yoghurt.
Just have to wait until supermarkets sell the Muller ones for under £1.25 for 4.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
They don't claim to be Muller.0

Only the 500ml original is close to Fairy.
The big 1000ml one although of the same brand is rubbish.
Always look out for the "award" sticker.
Bought also the 500ml apple one, haven't use yet, so will report later.0 -

I'm always amazed to see shoppers with bulging trollys of rubbish in these stores.
It's not fair to refer to bulging trolleyful as rubbish as there are many items that are good quality value for money buys in those stores.
I shop regularly in Lidl and find quality of many items good value for money.
Lidl NZ boneless lamb chops 2 pieces for £3.69 are superior to brand stores. Not cheap, but very tasty and tender.0 -
I bought two boxes of these ice creams recently, one strawberry the other chocolate. Four cones in a box for 95p. They're exceptional value, taste great and I would not hesitate to buy them again. Sorry cannot remember the brand name.
Strawberry trifles, three for 99p, again really good.
Bought some of their grated mature cheddar and it was great on my cheese on toast.
I enjoy their beef lasagne but when I come to do the washing up the red sauce seems to get onto everything. But the extra work cleaning up is worth it as I enjoy my meal.
Organic milk there is good, need to keep an eye on the dates though as dates not as long as on the pasteurised milk.
I could keep going on, I just do a small shop there a few times a week, but still need to go to other supermarkets for the bits n bobs I can't get in Aldi's. I admit I buy raw meat and eggs elsewhere but that's habit as much as anything.0 -
Edwood_Woodwood wrote: »Yes, good buys- any branded stuff that happens to be cheaper at any one time at Aldi or Lidl compared to the large supermarkets.
I also really like Lidl's Rowan Hill white bread rolls and muffins.
Bad buys- most everything else I have bought and never again.
I believe people are being conned.
For example, I tried Lidl (or Aldi's) own brand weetabix type cereal and it was disgusting, like cardboard, absolutely tasteless mulch that stuck to the roof of my mouth.
However, the interesting thing was that the discounted retailer's weetabix was the same yellow branding, the same design of the word "Weetabix" but called something like "weetaflakes," clearly designed to replica Nestle Weetabix.

To fool people's subconcious that they are seemingly getting a trusted brand of excellent quality whereas in reality they are substituting the very basic of what food is about-taste-all to save a few pence.
Oh no!!
First this thread gets moved to the Gone Off section.
Now another gremlin has appeared and MSE is showing posts that were clearly written in 2003.
By a berk.
Come on MSE - sort it out!!

Hence, got through the cheapo liquid in no time whereas Fairy will last much longer.
Quality v price I dare say Fairy won out, false economy.
Lidl's own brand pizza, floppy, soggy muck despite heating it for the required time, took one bite and binned it.
Aldi cheddar cheese was like rubber.
Even my cats turn their noses up at their pet food.
Plenty of others too and I dare not try much else unless it's a good brand from there.
Wow, what a bad-mouther - you can't be for real .... I'd be interested which of the big 4 pays you for what you are writing. You sound as if you have not tried a single thing you are writing about (including the washing up liquid). People on this thread really wish to discuss their honest opinions on products they (or their pets) have tried and liked or disliked and calling everything they offer "rubbish" is neither helpful nor can it be genuine, sorry....First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0
