I went in a Netto once, and only the once. The store was a dump and it stank. In fact the reason I ignored Aldi and Lidl for years was because I assumed they were like that Netto.

I do it all the time. My Mum thinks it's so wrong but we have never been ill with it and it tastes the same as before freezing. You sometimes get a small bit of water in the pack after defrosting.

Any reviews on those Limescale Prevention tablets posted upthread?
Have decided to buy a couple of boxes and compare to Calgon ingredients when I get home. Even if I use 2 tablets per wash I will still be quids in.

Eta: ok folks, I have bought the tablets and done the calculation so you don't have to. The Aldi tablets are v slightly heavier than Calgon, and active ingredients are 5-15% vs 15-30% for Calgon. The instructions for both are one per wash. Now this is not a precise science, but I'll be using 2 to get the approximate equivalent of one Calgon tablet. Of course it could be a complete waste of money if 2 tablets provide just 10% (depending on what that optimum concentration for the hard water in my area is), but for about 25p per wash I shall take my chances.

  • The Alska Strawberry and Lime cider which Aldi stock is really nice. £1.59 for 500ml so works out cheaper than individual bottles available at most supermarkets like Kopparberg and Rekorderlig, and tastes very similar. I would definitely buy again and will be doing when I next visit.

I also tried their potato wedges which were 59p and wasn't impressed (hard on the outside and not fluffy). They didn't have the same texture as the McCain or even Asda's own brand so I'd rather pay more for those. I'll use the bag up because it's not like they're inedible, just not comparable.

I've also been working my way through the 1kg bag of porridge which was 75p. Can't taste the difference between these and the Tesco Scottish Porridge Oats. Really tasty with some of Aldi's frozen raspberries popped in while cooking so they've defrosted by the time it's all done. So much cheaper than buying fresh fruit.

Save them for when you have friends over for drinks, then serve when people have had a skinful and need an alcohol-soaking snack. They will be grateful for anything! ;)

TBH I wonder if there's any point in using it at all. We're in a very hard water area, and the washing machine is now 18 years old and working just fine having never used Calgon (or similar).

    There's some discussion here:

    which may be of interest.
