I am a complete Aldi convert. Some of the highlights of the shopping list:

    Grandessa Chocolate Hazelnut spread
    Grandessa Strawberry conserve
    Aberdeen Angus Frozen Burgers
    Wheat Bisks (weetabix)
    Bread
    Bacon
    Cold Meats
    Mince Beef
    Grapes
    Bananas
    Kids Fromage Frais

I could go on. I've knocked around 40% off my weekly shop...

I haven't used Aldi for a while, intend to use it more when I am on mat leave.

    Good:

    bread - selection is excellent
    dried pasta/rice
herb pots if you can't gyo
    fizzyflavoured water
    cheeses

    Bad:
generally, the fruit - although if they have pink lady apples in they are worth it
filled fresh pasta - mine was full of fat rather than meat
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

Is the bread any good ?

It always used to feel a bit hard when I was filling the shelves all those years ago.

Thats where I buy my warburtons bread. Tastes exactly the same as when I spend 35p more for same loaf in Sainsbury and (until recently) Asda
  • i have never seen these in my local aldi - are they frozen? One thing I worry about when buying the frozen chicken dishes in aldi is whether or not they are British chicken - do you know if these are?
The chicken I buy is fresh at Aldi and it says British chicken on the label.

  • Well I tried the bacon bagel, bagel still on the chewy side, bacon nice if a little thin (compared to the asda extra special stuff)
Re the bread, we only buy the aldi Harvest bakery sliced bread now, OH prefers it much more than Warburtons etc, and its only 59p - unless you're OH who insists on getting the ultra thick version which is a few pence more *rollseyes*

Xmas Saver! I've been Money Tipped!

The only thing im not so keen on in these stores-those tiny trolleys :(
In one of the Lidls near me the trolleys are MASSIVE, I always comment on them whenever I go, much better than supermarket ones though as they are wider but less deep so things can be stacked nicely in them without getting squashed. In the other one there aren't even tolleys, it's like a Lidl Metro, tiny wincy thing.

As I've never seen an Aldi in my life I haven't tried any of the products, but from Lidl I find the museli very good, as are the Jaffa cakes. Their fruit and veg is always very good prices too, much the same as the market but better quality.

Used to shop mainly in Lidl/Waitrose, but now Aldi's taken Lidl's place - nice new air-conditioned store, and much, much friendlier staff.

Lidl's main downside was the fruit and veg - OK to use on the day or shortly after, but not any longer than that. Aldi's a bit better.

Most of the other stuff's fine from either. But it would be, wouldn't it, since most of it comes from exactly the same places that produce for all the other supermarkets. One of the Aldi cheeses, for example, is from the same creamery that supply M&S - same excellent cheese, but a fraction of the price.

The big loser in all this? Tesco - why would anyone still shop there? High prices, poor quality, indifferent staff, and an unpleasant, aggressive, bullying company.

My local Lidl is being expanded, though not by a huge amount. Just proves that it's popular

Yesterday I found organic Fair Trade bananas in Lidl for £1 :D The Oakland organic carrots had gone up however from 94p to £1 :(
