Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

  • I tried one of Aldi's gammon joints with maple syrup glaze last week (chilled not frozen) and it was delicious - very lean and so, so tasty. In fact I am very impressed with all the new chiller cabinet meals they are now stocking - well the ones I have tried at least!

My only complaint with Aldi now is that is too busy! We have been shopping there ever since it opened a good few years ago and could get in and out with a trolly load in no time at all. Now it is taking 3 times as long with all the new customers blocking the aisles and causing long queues at the checkouts and packing stations!!!

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have tried both Lidl and Aldi baked beans and prefer the Aldi ones.

The sauce is richer and the beans are softer.

I think Lidl charge £1.05 for 4 and Aldi £1.29 for 4, both are ring pull cans.

    ;)

I certainly agree about aldi being busy, I used to have my local one to myself, shouldn't have kept telling everyone how good it was :rotfl:

Their small tins of tuna with chilli are gorgeous

  • Only thing I've ever had from Aldi that wasn't as nice as branded was a pre prepared egg mayo sandwich spread. Toiletries are good, Crane sports gear too. Curry sauces (with the powder tub on the lid) are really nice.
Debt @ 17/11/12: £12,017 :embarasse. Hoping to be debt free by June 2014 :).

Not tried the chilli one but the lemon and black pepper variety is lovely.

Prefer Aldis fresh chickens, they have all their legs even though not free range. They also taste good (cook them in an inch of water in a dutch oven / casserole).

Two things we really like here is the chicken soup from the London Soup Company - in the chilled cabinet and Fruit Strudel with custard from the freezer.

I live alone and if I go to the Aldi where I live, chances are a customer from my work recognises me and lets me go in front of them!

The two main problems with the Aldi where I live is 1. The car park. Its very tiny - 30 spaces. Though you can park in the DIY store next door (both areas are owned by the same car park management company) or the council car park in the next street. The other one is queues. Obviously Aldi need to cotton on with using more tills or installing self scans. If they don't do the latter, then they will crumble with their success.

Though the next three nearest Aldis to me have HUGE carparks - one part of a retail park with about 7 stores. So if I am buying heavy or bulky things, I tend to go to one of these. Depending where I am and what I am doing, depends on which store I visit.

I had a ready meal (Sheppard's pie) from Aldi and it was revolting and too salty! I should had looked at the label - 3.3g of salt!
