Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl

I like Lidl frozen oven chips - the thicker ones at 67p for 1Kg. They aren't always available.... I'll get a bag once every 2 months, but it needs forethought as I've no freezer. What I do is cook half the bag immediately, putting half into a plastic box in the fridge. Next day do the same. At this point I've had chips 2 days in a row - and have two boxes of chips cooked/chilled that will need microwaving and eating in the next couple of days.
So by then I'll have had 250g of chips on 4 days in a row
That's why it's a treat.
I'll typically make the first one with a cheese omelette, the next two portions with half a tin of mushy peas each and the 4th day I'll use Asda instant curry sauce (just add water).
I also love Lidl part-baked baguettes, two for 39p. That's four meals!
Lidl Granarom cheap coffee granules are good too - I get through one jar every 1-2 months for £2.
I use the Lildl Bixies (Weetabix), bigger/better than the Tesco everyday basics ones.0 -

we always have fish and chips (both from Lidl) in the freezer for days we are both too late or busy to cook. Chippies' are nicer no question but at least 5 times dearer and we are 4 people.First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0

I agree but am curious why PN wants to be mse but doesn't have a freezer. Freezing YS buys, HM ready meals and leftovers is one of the best ways of saving IMO.0 -
I've just bought a new small chest freezer and it was £140 on a special offer, they aren't cheap! Second hand ones tend to be snapped up quickly.
A lot of Jack Monroe's budget recipes steer clear of freezer food and the left-overs can be kept in the fridge with no harm.
Back on topic, I tried the Aldi stuffed roast pheasant today, just enough for two, it was absolutely lovely. Game can often be dry, but this wasn't. I got the quail as well, reduced to £2.99, will be trying those shortly too.
I second the flavoured Bries and also the smoked cheese slices.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -
Had the "ready to cook" lamb shank in mint gravy from Aldi over the weekend from the cold shelf.
It was delicious, just enough meat for 2 adults. Think it was £3.49 - had been sitting in the freezer for a while so forget the price.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

Tried my local Lidl last weekend for meat. Bought DH & me a Scotch sirloin steak each & a chicken for Sunday. The steak was some of the best I've had for a long time - tender & tasty so worth the money. The chicken also was good and had a good flavour too. I'll be testing some more of their meats too.
I already love Lidl's Muesli, Potato Salad, Mature Cheese block, Lardons, packs of 5 sausage rolls & their multi seeded bread. I buy the refill packs of coffee in Aldi & odds & sods when I'm there 'cos they're not local to me.Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -

the quails where great, ill have some more if there on offer at that price, or any left when I go on Friday.
the holly lane fruit cake slices that where on offer with the last lot of vouchers in dm had a cheap almondy taste (I still ate them though), but the lemon cakes are top notch. ss fruit tarts that where on the vouchers at 79p I think, stunning value and tasted great, ill be getting them again on offer or not.;)
I see now why the voucher foods should be on the conveyer 1st
the Italian ground coffee No5 is good, but the same at lidl is a better flavour, perhaps as its a finer grind0
