Post Office Line Rental

  • Hi,

I am tempted to switch to the Post Office line rental package, and eventually get credited with the 2x lots of £25, but not just cos of that, but because I hate BT and have stupidly been with them all my life.

Its swings and roundabouts with the call costs, somethings are cheaper with BT, some look cheaper with the PO, but the PO off peak does start at 6pm and they do free calls to mobiles all weekend (correct?).

What I'd like to know is:

    a) Can you definitely keep your existing BT phone number (I dont wanna switch and PO say actually you can't...)
    b) Can you still use 141 to withold your no
    c) 1471 to listen to the last caller
    d) 1571 to listen to any voice messages (for free)

or are b, c & d exclusice to BT? They are very handy free features.

I'm also concerned that they are a nightmare for taking direct debits out, anyone else confirm this please?

Also, how do I know if I will be stung with any charges for leaving BT? No point saving £50 with the PO if BT wanna charge me £50 for leaving them!

I am on their unlimited evening and weekend package.

I am just furious that I pay like £16 a month just to have a landline, even if I don't use the phone in a month.

I pay BT £24.50 a month and each time they say that doesn't cover the quarterly bill :(

    I hate BT :(

    Rant over :rotfl:

Can you still get 10% off to select callers too? Can I add the mobile numbers I call most from a landline to this 10% list?

I am on a VIRGIN mobile PAYG package and get stung 26p a minute for calls to other mobiles, 26p to listen to my voice messages, and pay 10p per text, but can't afford a monthly package and hardly ever call, more of a texter!

I need the BT landline - or a landline - for my BE Broadband monthly package, an excellent company by the way :T

    Cheers

Line rental is £14.60 per month-not £16. It's to fund the maintenance of the line and network, whether you use it or not. You still pay road fund tax, whether you drive 1 mile a year or 20,000 miles.
Switch to monthly whole bill DD? Use Line Rental Saver?
Any ETC payable will depend on whether you are still in a minimum term contract.
The fact that you are making around £10 of exclusive calls every month indicates that you need to be on an Anytime tariff-an immediate saving of £60 pa (assuming that these are landline calls).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Many, many thanks OldGreyFox :j
That was such a helpful post and you have made things a lot easier for me, cheers
I will research some of the other companies now!

Only clinging to the rip-off Virgin PAYG as my other half is on their Simply 8p tariff and she gets something like 50 minutes a month of FREE calls to other Virgin users i.e. me!

Interesting you can use 18185 on the Post Office line rental too :T

I haven't switched to the Post Office landline deal yet as I have this past week read some horrific reviews about them being more incompetent than BT, that their customer service is diabolical, and you can't pay by monthly direct debit.... and even when you HAVE paid them, they chase you with threatening debt letters :(

Not very reassuring at all, but they DO have a more reasonable off-peak times, and let you call UK mobiles for FREE all weekend.

Better make my mind up if I want the £50 credit on offer..... :rotfl:

    Anyone else recommend them please?

    i will recommend them.

i dont know what problems people keep having...i havent had any whatsoever. !!!!!! do people do with their landlines to constantly have to ring their suppliers up for?

i DO pay them by DD. they take it every three months.

getting through to the CS can be a little slow, but once there then yes theyre quick enough to take payment (for the times ive paid by card)

i had a restriction on my phone which came off pretty sharpish.

if i had one bad thing to say as of yet then basically my contract is up, so i rang them and said look youre offering £50 to new people, if i resign can i have it aswell.

they dont seem to know which department can answer this question because i got passed around like five times then i gave up and will try another day when i have the time and patience.

    i always get my way.

other than that, all is kosher. been 2 year now. no mishaps.
