Have seen a fantastic job using the experience/skills I already have. The money offered is between £20-£23k, sadly it's FT

I've had a look on entitled.co.uk to see how much tax credits etc I'd get and if I've done it correctly my income would be £463 pw incl WTC. I've done some rough figures and after paying rent/bills/petrol etc I'd have about £260 pm to throw at my debts, which means I could clear my debt in 2 years. BUT do I want to work FT? I have to weigh up whether the time spent at work would be worth it being debt free sooner or will I regret not spending this time with my DD?

    I really don't know....

Hard one Tigzem. I have four children, the eldest is 18 (and brought me three bags of washing home for mothers day) the youngest is 17 months. I worked full time with the first three and then wanted to be a SHM with youngest. Unfortunately, I was 'made redundant' whilst on maternity leave and due to OH having no job at the time, we struggled and got behind with bills and cc's. It was my lightbulb moment big style! I took the first full time job that came along.

Twelve months down the line and I actually felt comfortable enough to go part time and work 3 days a week. However, my income reduced drastically and I couldn't carry on paying my debts off as quickly as I wanted to. Consequently I became a bit depressed and stressed and I have gone back to work full time. My little one goes to a child minder and loves it. She is happy and thrives with the other kids. I thrive with the adults and we come together at the end of the day full of stories for each other.

Obviously we can't make a decision for you, but I just wanted to tell you my story because whatever you do - if you are happy, your little one will be happy. Don't feel guilty whatever option you choose.

  • i knw exactly how u feel. ive been in and out of work for the last 18months. i fell head ova heals in love wiv a guy who had his own shop in town where i live. for the 1st 6months life was amazin! we went out 4 meal, went clubbin had a fantastic time! until the day he confessed to me that he had been a heroin and crack addict 4 the last 7 years! he was in alot of debt but i loved him so much i decided that we could deal with this and get things sorted. i took out a credit card to help him pay off some of the debt on the condition that he got help and got clean. this worked and life started to get better until 2 months down the line he told me that he was using again. again i stuck by him, took out a small loan and took us both on a 2week holiday 2 turkey, this way i was there while he got clean and we had an extra week to have sum fun! which we did, i had money left from the loan so we did a weeks diving course. i thort at least this way he has got sumthin to keep him occupied when back at home. we are still togther and so far so gud, he hasnt 'used' for 5 months an 12 days and ive neva been so proud of him. BUT the credit card and loan still arn't paid. as i sed ive been in and out of work for the last 18months mostly because i cnt settle and get bored to eailsly and end up quitting and finding anotha job, ive taken out more credit cards to pay off the first ones and like u sed, i dnt knw where the money went from them! now i hav 6 credit cards and 2 small loans to pay off, an awfull credit rating, (which i supose is a gud thing cus now i cnt get a loan ANYWHERE!) and a job that yet again ive had enuf of! like you im not entirley sure HOW much i owe and where but the last time i forsed myself to open the pile of letters on my table it was sum where around £6000! it might not seam alot to most people who have a morgage and things like that but im 20 this year and should be out enjoying life not sitting awake everynight worring about what il do if my creditors take me 2 court or send the baliffs (as i live with my parents and dont exactly have anythin to show for where all the money went!) i found this site via my dad, who is desperatly tryin to help, bless him, and hav sent the 1st draft letter to my bank to claim bak somewhere around £2000 in charges over the last year and a half! at least its a start! my fella is paying me back bit by bit but £50 in my hand everyweek just seams to go on fags and 1 nite dwn the pub for a drink or 2! (hardly the life we used to lead!) all i can say is keep your chin up girl! everything happends for a reason! (i must hav upset some1 and now im bein punished!) in the end things will work out the way they are suposed to. i hope everythin works out 4 u and your daughter, life is short so spend as much time with her as you can! all my love sarah x :j

Thank you for your reply, it helps a lot hearing from someone in a similar situation. Do you just work mon-fri? I'm thinking if only for a short time until debts paid off would be ok (2 years) but then I guess DD will be at school anyway?

Oh it's such a dilemma.... thank you for your help x

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with me. I hope your BF stays clean and you can work together to clear your debt. You've come to the right place, the people on here are fab! And £6k is a lot of money, when you owe it anyway!! Good luck on the job front, keep in touch, let me know how it's going x

I have thought about your dilemma quite a lot over the weekend. What I found is that when my children were quite small, they had needs that could be met by another caring person (my childminder, who was the nearest thing I had to a mother). As long as I appeared at the same time every day they were quite happy.

I found they needed me more as they went to school. Life becomes more difficult when they go to school. There are the holidays and illness, family assemblies and parents afternoons!

If you could work for two years and pay your debts off in time for when your little one goes to school then go for it!!!

And yes I only work Monday to Friday (Its against my religion to do weekends!)

  • Hi Tigz - well done on your progress to date - sounds like the Chutzpah worked getting half of the holiday deposit back! Also great news that your OH is on board and trying to motivate you not to spend.

Re the car and whether to go back to work f/t or p/t - tough one to crack, but I guess it may be better do get rid of the car and go f/t now for a couple of years, then when your little one gets older you will have more debt paid off and feel a bit more comfortable possibly returning to p/t? The debt will become more and more of a burden the longer it takes to pay off.

Tough decision to make though and wish you all the luck in getting to the right one!

Thanks Eagerlearner & Sammy for your replies...

I've applied for the FT job, it's through an agency and a guy called me today from there today (applied online) to say I sound ideal for the job, huh, that's what they're paid to say isn't it :rotfl: Anyway it's a company in town, I could get a bus, or maybe get a lift with my cousin who works close by, so I could sell my car if I get the job. (Car is worth approx £1500) which would be a nice chunk off the debt.

I'm just laden with guilt about even thinking about leaving my DD, but like Sammy said, if I get it paid off in 2 years then at least I could drop to PT whilst DD at school. Just done a snowball based on a payment of £260pm, I could clear it by April 2009 (DD due to start school sept 09 or Jan 10) which would be fab!! Obviously I need to find a job 1st so realistically DFD could be July 09...how fab would that be? OR if I sold the car and cleared £1000, could be cleared by Jan 09.... this snowballing calculator is fab!!

Ok, enough rambling for now. Oh, am visiting 2 nurseries and 1 childminder tomorrow. Hope to hear back from the agency on Wed, see how my CV was rec'd. Lone Parent Advisor meeting on 29th March, should get some def figures then. My head hurts now :rotfl:
