Thanks all for your comments about hospital stays. I think you've changed my mind - I'll want out as soon as I can! I know my hospital allows only 3 people per bed so it shouldn't be too bad with visitors but your stories of night-time screaming and showers... omg, I don't want to do this.

jediquigley - my antenatal classes will start when I'm 32 wks and finish when I'm 35wks (it's one class per week over 4 weeks). I too hope my baby will not come before then as I've no clue what to do with babies. Just now I'm even scared to touch them!

I am due 10th September with my first child, a little boy. I have no clue what I need/don't need and despite going through this thread a bit, it moves too fast to follow. lol.

What do I actually need to buy? I'm so confused everyone keeps telling me different things and my head is starting to spin!

And last thing - why does everyone want to leave the hospital ASAP? I always thought it's better to stay longer in case there's something wrong with the LO. Surely they won't be able to check much in a few hrs? Admittedly, I've never been admitted to a hospital so don't know what it's like.

I'm having my baby in the North of Ireland and there have been so many hospital infection issues here recently like pseudamonas etc. As soon as I'm able to leave I'm outta there!

    Hi Twinklie.

I was in the same boat as you and still am really!

Basically, looking through all the baby catalogues years ago when my sister was pregnant I thought, Oh when its my turn I'll have this and that and everything will be perfect.

Now however, I find that we don't have anywhere near enough money to just buy everything we want and I have had to think carefully about what it is we actually need. Sometimes I feel a bit guilty that something so precious can't have all the material bells and whistles, but then I think of the amount of love that will be showered on this child and I feel better :D

What I have got (either bought or been given) is
    • Moses basket & stand and bedding for it
    • Car seat & buggy
    • Newborn clothes (mostly hand-me-downs, but new stuff for hospital)
    • changing mat & some nappies & wipes
    • steriliser & a few bottles in case I can't breast feed.
I plan to get a cot, more clothese and more bits for the nursery when the baby is a few months old.

My sister lives in another country now so can't pick her brains as much as I would like to - I'd be keen to hear if anyone with more knowledge than me thought there was something crucial I was missing out? :)

Thanks gtothec. We were promised lots of things by family that they have then given to other people last month! Hmmm...so now our budget needs reorganising.
    We have bought:
    -Nappies and wipes.
-Steriliser and a few bottles (just in case and for later when at work).
-Feeding pillow (I have a weakness in one shoulder so need this).
    -Toiletries (baby oil, shampoo etc).

Thats all I have so far.
We are looking at a 3in1 travel system but am a bit clueless as to what to get. I will need one that is robust though because we will be spending the first 6 months of babies life living in the back of beyond with pot holes and fields galore! Any suggestions?

I'm going to jump in on the hospital discussion if that is OK. Whilst it wasn't very comfortable to be kept in hospital for me when I had DD my extended stay was for the best. Luckily my hospital had a spare private room (which they cahrge for but don't make any distinction between easy and not so easy births) so after the first night I moved into one.

The ward itself wasn't fantastic, at one point the woman 2 beds away from me who had had a c-section about 3 hours before f'd and blinded at a MW and called her a c*nt because she advsised her against going out for a fag (she still had a catheter in). Luckily DH heard this exchange and demanded I be moved ASAP.

If you can get a side room please do, they let you heal emotionally and physically a little bit quicker as you don't have to listen to everyone elses noise.

Having said all that, there is no way I was in a fit state to look after myself let alone DD and was discharged at the right time; without having to beg and not when I felt too soon either so maybe that helped me cope with the stay a bit better?

Not sure if that adds anything, I know there are lots of terrible stories about hospital births and just wanted to pipe up just in case anyone was getting scared about going in as they are not all that bad. The MWs at my hospital are on the whole fantastic, just one or two that aren't exactly approachable and who I quickly learned to avoid wherever possible.

I'm not trying to undermine anyones bad experiences, just trying to add in a little bit of reassurance IYKWIM.

Been tipping it down here again today, apparently the sun will be out tomorrow but I'm a bit sceptical. Hope everyone else has had a nice weekend

The travel system we have been given is a few years old, but its a GRACO one. Seems solid enough. We are going to try it out tomorrow in the car and do a test drive to the hospital etc - I'll let you know how we get on.

I know there have been lots of people who have been discussing prams etc recently on here, so I'm sure someone will be along to advise you on a suitable model.:)

With regard to baby toiletries. My sis bathed the baby in water only. Do I need shampoo, body wash, body oil etc etc or is it just a gimmick? Obviously I do not want my baby to be uncomfortable and wouldn't skimp on things like this that are relatively cheap, but also do not want to encourage reactions on sensitive skin or stockpile a load of stuff I'll never need.

I have no idea about the toiletries, but if bubs doesn't need them I'd happily use them on myself! :D I love baby products. Ha ha. It's just they were on offer VERY cheaply and it was too good a deal to pass up.

I think it is just water though initially as far as I'm aware.
