Oh ginzt and lisa *hugs* you make me feel guilty for complaining about my family.

Though my MIL & FIL could feasibly turn up unannounced they're never going to - my MIL wouldn't even pop round to my BIL's without an invite despite him living 2 streets away from her. The rest of my OH's family and all of my family plus most of our friends live a minimum of an hour away so wouldn't risk visiting without checking with us first.

We do very occassionally get friends turning up unannounced because we're near the A14 so if they happen to be driving past they pop in but they generally only stay for a cup of tea.

I'm slightly concerned about being bombarded with suggestions of how to look after my baby though everyone has been very restrained during my pregnancy so far :)

Lisa, as givzt suggested it may be worth posting on the redundancy board or the employment board as there are a few specialists on there. Often learning contracts specify how long you have to stay at the company after the completion of the course in order not to have to repay a % of the cost - could others have not had to pay because they'd stayed this length of time?

Oh unannounced visitors are my big worry when LO gets here, my parents are terrible for just turning up, often on a Sunday when I'm not out of bed yet, house is a flipping state etc and I'm less than happy to see them, tried asking them to call first but they don't/won't, explained I'd like to be ready, feel tidy, have milk in for them, they responded with, oh don't worry about doing all that for us! My mam cannot see that just because they don't work and have a clean house all the time, I don't have time after work and university and like to be ready for visitors.

This CANNOT happen when I have LO, they are already talking about how they'll be popping in to help etc, I'm grateful but at the same time I need some space and boundaries to live my own life, made a rod for my own back though moving to live just down the road from them!

They turn up to my sis's too, but she told dad to pee off the last time and that seemed to work! Might have to try that out myself!
  • We never tend to get the unnanounced drop-ins too much since we live a fair distance away from our families - what we DO get (and drives me nuts) is them all using us as a cheaper alternative to the M1 services since we're like 5 minutes off one of the motorway junctions. Least that's a couple of cups of coffee, sandwich and they're offski deal!

Having said that - my MIL is coming down to stay in a hotel when I'm due - handy to have someone on hand to take care of the dogs when I do go in, and with the distance it's the only way she's likely to get to spend any decent time with the baby for a few months until FIL is back in the country (he works away on rotation).... but unlike seemingly the rest of the planet - I get on well with my MIL, probably better than with my own mother at times (although that's finally started to settle down into a less destructive relationship over the last couple of years).

I'm taking voluntary redundancy so in effect I'm choosing to leave.

I'm not sure there's a legal distinction between voluntary and compulsory redundancy. Get some advice from ACAS.
