I know that feeling! I see my GP, and then the nurse for urine. Last time I went in the nurse said "what can I do for you" I said just to check my urine, "why" meanwhile I'm standing there with a bump and waving my maternity notes in her face. Then after all that palaver she said "so what are you expecting it to say" well I don't know?!? then she grumbled saying "it's clear" then didn't understand why she had to sign my notes, or where to sign them. She wasn't a young nurse either, so Christ knows what was going on.

It doesn't really fill you with confidence does it?

The worst thing is she's been a midwife at one of our hospitals for over 20 years, now switched to being a community midwife and just seems clueless about how it works outside of hospital.

Can't wait for One Born tonight, it's the highlight of my week lol :D (how sad am I?). I am loving all the baby related telly recently though.
Watched Call the Midwife earlier, and found that good. Don't know what Miranda will be like in it though next week.

Also, if anyone who has a small baby/might have small babies (Jannine, Lovecrafting, etc) wants any early baby/tiny baby bodysuits (up to 6lb) I have a new 6/7 pack from Asda that I don't need, so would be happy to send them if they'll come in useful for someone. X

    Hi everyone

Lovely shiny new thread, hopefully it will help me keep up (!) my resolution of delurking :)

I love one born every minute. I only started watching this series but have been catching up on 4od. I feel so much better about that great unknown in May. I actually feel really lucky to have such a programme about something I will be going through.

With bf/not bf, what I have been thinking is that I would like to bf but mainly using a pump rather than myself as I just can't get my head round it....I have read great things about the medela and in mothercare today read a guide saying the swing one was best for daily pumping so it does seem possible, but obviously I don't know if I will take to pumping. I have googled a bit and it seems quite American to exclusively pump, most NHS stuff seems to say bf for the first few weeks to establish it etc......I really don't know that much about it but if for example it just wasn't happening in hospital and we used a formula bottle, can you then change back to bf or should it really only be one or the other......sorry if this is a stupid question....:rotfl:

Hello Legal Blonde, by breast feeding to start with you are establishing your supply and getting used to it. To exclusively pump from Day 1 would be difficult I'd say. They recommend leaving it 2 weeks before you start expressing, although some midwives will recommend expressing a little the day your milk comes in to reduce engorgement. The thing with expressing exclusively is how time consuming it is, one of the ladies on here had to express only because her baby was prem and in SCBU and found it incredibly draining and hard going, and her milk started to dry up despite expressing as often as she could.

If you feel you could express every 2/3 hours, as well as feeding, sterilising the bottles/breast pump then I can't see any issues, but I think you're setting yourself up for more work, if that makes sense?

P.s I bought the Medela Swing and it's supposed to be really good, not tried it out yet though, obviously :p

Thank you :) Yes I think it would be a lot of work, I do like the idea of being organised and able to track how much they are feeding etc, with the advantages of BF, but I know this would all only be the case if and when it was established.

I think it sounds like I would be best BF at first and then move on to the pump so OH can feed/for convenience etc.

    Thank you for the info.

It is so hard to know. I have tried not to talk to other people in RL too much about any of it, what way of giving birth, what way to feed etc, but the 2 people I did speak to about BF/not BF, one did with all her kids and one didn't and they both had a list as long as your arm of reasons why the other one was bad :rotfl::rotfl:

I lurk on here every day, I am originally from NI and now live in England, so enjoy your adventures the other way round :)

Well providing I get on with bf I am hoping to express so my OH can help with night feeds etc :) but with being in the house etc a lot to start off with I think I'd find breast feeding easier. Not to say I will make it to 12 months or whatever but to start with I will give it a go. I was only bf until 12 weeks because my mum had to go back to work :o

On another note I'm going to see Girl with the Dragon Tattoo tonight, over joyed that I can see it before baby arrives, so bump if you're listening, stay in there until mummy has seen her movie :o

Not long now Gillyx! :D Hope you get to see all your film, and that it's not too jumpy...! ;)

DH has just got home with the cot...it's the same as this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/East-Coast-Anna-Dropside-White/dp/B001WAK4SK/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby&ie=UTF8&qid=1326910806&sr=1-1

Really pleased with it, it's pretty much as good as new :) Just the sort of thing I had in mind, and a good size to have next to our bed too. Can't wait to buy all the bedding etc to go with it!

Looking forward to OBEM tonight, I love that programme. DH laughed at me last week though as I cried my eyes out all the way through, starting during the opening credits...! I really enjoyed Call the Midwife the other day, too. I personally quite like Miranda Hart and I'll be interested to see how she is in that.
