I will be a grandmother very soon, I do not plan to give my grandchildren regular pocket money. My kids didn't get it and nor did I from my grandparents.

My parents regularly too k my children on weekends away, days out, did crafts and hobbies with them and this made that into adaptable, capable adults.

Time is more important than money in my opinion, I plan to do great stuff with my grandchildren but I doubt I will give them money.

Is this trying to buy the grandchilden's affections? Could this cause trouble with the real parents?

I haven't started giving my DGC regular pocket money but I put money into their savings accounts every month. (They're too young to know about this, but it's with their parents's agreement).

I do the usual holiday money thing and the odd £1 or £2 coin when I see them, but not every time or I'd be broke!

I just wondered what other grandparents did.

As for buying their love - I don't believe that you can do that but I love them and I'm sure that they love me.

No not regularly no, as a special treat here and there if we went together to the newsagents they would get me some sweets or a comic or maybe add a bit of money towards the x y or xz I was saving for but not weekly, it always seemed more special when they did it that way:D

My youngest (14) is the only "young" grandchild and i have told my parents not to spoil her and theve agreed and also told my youngest not to accept it and she agreed too. So no regular pocket money. Although for about the last 3 years on a Saturday they seem to manage to "see" each other before Nan & Grandad goes out and DD goes to town. Her other Nanna & Pops spoil her in other ways too.

  • I used to get some sweetie money from my grandparents when I was little (enough for a 15p mix-up at the corner shop), but when I was teenage my Granda put my copy of Smash Hits on his newspaper bill as I really enjoyed reading it.

My other grandparents put some money in a savings account for me.

No - I am a grandparent and I dont give the grandkids pocket money. I do spend money on them - craft kits and bits and pieces and they occasionally get the odd pound to take home for the ice cream van.
Its up to the parents to give pocket money.

I know of one lad (oldest ds friend) who gets at least £5 from his nan EVERY DAY!!!!! She looks after him before and after school and she gives him the money but tells him not to tell his parents - he just spends the whole lot on sweets. I think this situation is wrong as it is a secret between them so the parents don't get a say, and tbh he is not exactly a healthy looking lad (to put it politely) due to the amount of sweets he consumes each day.

I don't mind my kids getting the odd treat from their grandparents but I certainly wouldn't be happy if they were being sneaky or secretive. If OP wants to give pocket money then I think they should check with the parents first to make sure it's ok.
  • Well many (and I mean many) years ago my nan used to give me and my sister 20p every saturday as we were leaving and my grand dad used to save his coppers and at the end of every month used to share them out between us.

They then included my 2 cousins and once one of them was overheard to whisper to the other one not to rush to put their coat on as they hadn't had their 20p (or whatever it was then)

Needless to say their dad went mad and refused to let them have the money as a punishment.

Mum has never given Junior regular pocket money but has given him money if he goes away

I was going to say no, but then I thought, and I'm sure my nan used to have jars under the stairs and used to put in 20p a week for us (she also used to keep a small box of toys under there too), but I don't remember ever having or spending the money!

Actually thinking more, I think we must have had it and spent if at the sweet shop on our way home which wasn't our regular sweet shop!

For a time we also used to go round once a week/fortnight for tea, and she always gave us a food parcel to take home too with homemade cake, and biscuits and stuff. Good old fashioned feeding us all up (even though we already had plenty)!
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.
