As a grandparent, do you give your grandchildren regular pocket money?

    I'm not a grandparent, but a parent.

I would not expect the grandparents to give our children pocket money. Firstly, because its up to DH and I to fund our childrens' spending money, and secondly, because its DH & I's decision on how much spending money we think its appropriate for our children to have.

I'm perfectly happy with the GPs giving money for birthdays/christmas, which can go into bank accounts. But regular spending money should come from the parents imo, or at the very least be discussed and arranged with the parents first.

I've never heard of grandparents giving regular pocket money tbh - seems like quite a strange idea to me.

My dad always slips my son a couple of quid at a weekend, usually if he's won at golf! Its not "pocket money" as such, but he always comes home with something!

My grandparents didn't - just the usual "gift" money. I have no objections to grandparents doling out regular pocket money but I think it should be on the understanding that it's got nothing to do with how much pocket money the parents choose to give.

I'm a parent but neither my parents nor my ex husband's mother, give any of the boys regular pocket money. They will however, give them a little treat every now or then....and eldest has found he can worm his way around his paternal nan for a subway!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

No, money from grandparents should be sporadic and unexpected. Even at a young age children should learn to budget their pocket money and if cash from grandparents becomes too regular and dependable it makes the lesson harder to learn.

I've never heard of grandparents giving regular pocketmoney before - Unless they are primary carers of the children in question.
Like most here, Money from the grandparents is usually given when we go on days out etc... Its never been a regular thing. But then my DD is only 4 so doesnt have a NEED for pocketmoney, but when she does it will come from me and her dad.

its never even crossed my mind that grandparents should give pocket money! My children get money from them now theyre older for birthdays/xmas as theyre too old for toys now.

Otherwise its a treat - like last year Mum gave them £10 each before we went on holiday. That way it becomes an unexpected surprise, or a reward - rather than something kids come to expect.

Nothing regular, but my mum often buys them bits and bobs and like PudseyDB they are often given some spending money when we go on holiday.

My grandma used to give us a pound between us when she saw us and let us walk round to the corner shop near her house on our own and CHOOSE OUR OWN SWEETS. When I look back it makes me chuckle how exciting that was :j:rotfl:
