Is it law to display the number? I have owned two houses and neither had the number displayed anywhere. Many of my neighbours do not have numbers on their doors. I honestly did not know 'you stil have to display the proper number' that is news to me. No sarcasm, just really wondered if you have to display it and who enforces this rule.

Nothing to do with the number 13 (which is a stupid reason to not buy a house) so sorry for the derail even though its related.

According to the Post Office and planning laws you do have to display your house number - unless your house was built years ago and was given just a name and not a number. The fire service etc insist upon it.....

Of course, huge country estates (such as Highgrove) probably have their own postcode - and with no immediate neighbours the house wouldn't be difficult to find! But if you had a long street with ordinary houses not numbered it's a different thing altogether.

All I do know is if you want to name your house that already has a number, you must include the number in your address.

I would not buy a number 13 house. I have a phobia of odd numbers, anything I can control has to be a even number (i.e. volume control, buying things etc). So a house with a odd number will be a no no. Its a strange phobia, and I seriously think odd numbers are unlucky, I am a bit strange I think.

There are only a few things that are odd. Although I buy most things in two's I am a realist, so I only buy one of something if I can relate it to a even number. E.G. my house number is even and my car reg is even. Pretty much everything else I buy I buy in two's or more.

Our house has 13 steps on the stairs and being superstitious that freaked me out a little bit. I decided early on that to get around this when counting in the dark, I'd miss the number 13 out altogether and count to 14 instead. Not that anyone's likely to ask how many steps are on our stairs, but if they were to ask I'd answer 14 just because that's how I count them lol. My fiance and I moved in together on Saturday 14th February and not because it was Valentines Day and it seemed a nice day to start our future together, it's because there wasn't a hope in hell that we were going to sign up for the start of our new life on Friday 13th lol.

I guess that means yes, I would avoid number 13. I'm a bit strange like that lol.
Yaaay, I finally conned a man into making a honest woman of me. Even more shocking is that I can put the words "Happily" and "Married" into the same sentence and not have life insurance on my mind when I say it ;-)

Are you married? The Chinese pictogram for 'argument' or something similar apparently represents 2 women under the same roof.

Thought I was bad lol! I like (not sure about 'have') to live at a house where the number relates to '3'. Has to be divisible by 3 (by one or both numbers), or somehow add up to 3 (say 41 where you could take the 1 from the 4 and make a 3, or have a 3 in it. Not sure what I'd do if I found a house at say no 11 I wanted to buy!).

So far, out of the homes I've bought, there's been 35, 13, 207, 3 (hurrah!), 62 (can just about scrape two 3s from the 6) and 18.

Gawd, I can't believe I forgot to mention that when I was thinking the OP was mad for worrying about no 13 (sorry lol!).

My family own a house 13, have done since it was built, my mum was a little upset at first as all the paperwork prior to us moving in had it listed as 'Plot 19' and most of the other house plots on the street have the plot number as the house number, but it certainly wouldn't occur to me to be bothered by living at a number 13 in the future.

We had the usual dramas living there, but nothing I would attribute to the house number - parents divorced, had to have two pets PTS, teenage dramas x2, but it's been our family home for over 20 years now and I would imagine over that period of time in any one family there will be the same incidents.
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

The number 13 in our street has been very unlucky.

The first owners of the newly built house - Husband accidentally ran over and killed one of their two dogs. The wife was hysterical with grief - they had no children, so they felt about them like they were their children.

Second owners - Marriage broke down - so they sold.

Third owners - Marriage broke down - so they sold.

Fourth owners - I'm still waiting for....

That's unfortunate but car accidents happen and there is a high divorce rate. I'm sure you could find similar histories to many houses and it has nothing to do with the number.

I would not let the number put me off a house I liked, especially if I could get a discount!
  • Another one who lived for over 29 years at a number 13. No Problems to report

We are FTB, really liked a house. Only thing that is making us a bit reluctant to go ahead is that house number is 13. Want to know what others think about number 13?

We did buy a number 13 (although we don't live in it), but we wouldn't buy number 10, personally I think it's a load of !!!!!!!!, but because of superstition my (half chinese) wife wouldn't buy a property with the number 10.
