I've been reading Continental Drifter by Peter Moore, in which he follows in the footsteps of Thomas Coryat, travelling round Europe. It's hard to believe that back then the English didn't know what a fork was and ate with their hands. He brought the fork back and - it would appear - has a lot to answer for.
ETA: sorry, I meant Tim Moore. Peter Moore is a bloke I used to work with. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I love your sig. I am sigless atm, maybe i should pronounce your hotness in my sig:rotfl:
What happened to your "vice of reason" and "pants defying enclosure" sig?My daughter brought home the most amazing boy yesterday. Well over 6 feet tall, handsome, intelligent, well educated, good manners, religious (like she is), and very eligible. By far the best looking boy that she had ever brought home to see us, but sadly as gay as a maypole
She needs to find out if he has any brothers - if so they might well be similarly good looking, well educated, religious etc, but straight.lostinrates wrote: »Chewy, you might enjoy the mooncup thread. :A

Made my day. Gen is right, though, I doubt chewy's brave enough for the mooncup thread.
On the subject of tanning... I don't tan, but I only very occasionally burn. I just remain pale. I remember once years ago spending all day up in the mountains over Grenoble on a beautiful sunny August day. The girl I went with had a tan before we started, and was burnt by the end of the day. I was white at the beginning of the day and still white when we came back down. No sunscreen for either of us.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
Well, that's a shambles. Standing there for an hour ... then missed it.
There were LOADS of people - didn't expect that. Then, just as the 'procession' started, cars stopped right in front of us ... and we thought the torch was about to come... but it wasn't.... there were LOADS of bikes and cars and everything first... and I had no idea where the actual torch was. There were these huge flags in the way ... and there were some buses and I turned round as I wanted to go to the other side of the road and there it was, it'd just passed me, she was jogging 6' behind a huge bus.
Shambles I say ....
So - camera in hand, but not poised, I pointed and snapped... thought I'd get a blurry left heel. Seem to have a photo of her/flame though.0 -
I thought I'd stick a bob into the NPT jukebox:

lostinrates wrote: »...is more important than the right fork to me....
The thing with that is .... if you've been told there's a right fork - and you know about forks... that doesn't mean others know of the same. And that's not their fault is it.
I've never eaten a meal where there's more than one fork... although, when I was 8, I did learn how to lay a table, which I think had two forks, for a badge at something similar to brownies (but it wasn't brownies).... and actually, there was no actual badge for it either. You just got a tick by your name. I'd probably struggle to remember how I had to lay stuff down... I think it was two knives, two forks and a fork/spoon for the afters. And a glass. Had to learn where to put those.0 -

I doubt anyone would enjoy the mooncup thread, not for the subject matter, but for the evangelical nature of the posters. Like Jehovah's witnessess they are out to convert the world.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. There's a story I read about the Queen but I feel that it is probably one of those urban myths. Anyway it was at one of those big posh banquets at Buckingham Palace and the Queen was seated opposite the Prince of somewhere obscure, when he picked up the finger bowl and drank from it. The servants were probably horrified, but the Queen picked up hers and drank from it too.
Now that I think is good manners. I can't believe it's true but at least it makes a point.0 -
I have a lil' bro, late 20s, 6 foot, a bit beanpole, more intelligent than me  but a bit geeky with it but hopefully the next Zuckerberg. He may not be entirely single but definitely in to ladies. Would you like to meet him PN?Thanks for all the offers of sons/cousins for my DD. I will have to check with my management before doing any match-making. What I can say is that, far from being freaked by it LIR, I would be honoured. Same with you, Silvercar.PasturesNew wrote: »How come I was never offered this freebie?
