So you asked three builders to quote, one came back with an inflated price and the other two declined to bid?

There's got to be at least a small chance that they are colluding.

Not quite, but sort of. I think its unlikely they are colluding.....i think our package looks a bit scary, its very detailed.

(she's model material so you have to be on that scale)

I don't think that is. Necessarily true. A lot of very attractive people are not that beautiful, some have a je ne sais quoi that is palpable from the minute they enter the room (lucky things!) others have the art of self presentation honed perfectly.

Are one lot of general builders the right people to be doing all of the work? No idea what you're actually doing, but maybe you need to split out the basic stuff and do that as phase I, then get someone else in to do the next phase?

But I can't accept any fewer than 6 pints.
    <burp>

That can be arranged, although you'll have to come back to mine after (for a pizza-pasta-pizza).

I'd go back to the declining builders and find out why they have declined. Could it be you've missed something critical in your selection process that you need to include and reconsider? If you do have to go back out to tender, which will be a great shame, at least you can do so knowing what the issues are and selecting a slightly different audience accordingly.

The decliners have said they are too busy. But they were not too busy before we sent tender package out and checked with them. One was a late substitution for the other. So think they might be quailing having seen package.

Our package is extremely detailed, leaving little wriggle room for 'extras', as there is so much itemisation. Our preferred chap is still in, but the price we simply cannot afford. (and no scrimping on bed linen will make a difference!) .

I think we will have to back out to tender really:(. Or sell!

For the record, best thing to buy is what they are already drinking.

Natch. That's how rounds work. Obviously I would be expecting a pint of lager back.

I can't imagine anything worse than bothering a random in a pub and wasting six quid on a glass of wine in the process.

Now that I think about it I did get asked by a woman if I would buy her a drink once. I think it was during a stag do in a strip club in Portugal. I don't remember what happened next.

Ask them again. Be frank, ask them if there's something that you aren't getting or don't realise the significance of.

I know I'm being mega-cheeky here, but could you invite Doozer down for dinner and ask her to go over the house from a builder's perspective and see what it is you are missing (sorry Doozer but don't ask, don't get)..... Maybe for a day's fees. She may be able to suggest a different way to parcel the job or do things. Of course you may already be doing that so apologies for stating the obvious in that instance.

Architects are great for conceptualising but its the builder who knows that at the end of the day they have to deliver.

I'd forgotten all about that magnificent invention.
Deal, but I might need 10 pints for that.

Changing the subject completely, do any teachers or people with GCSE age children know about the GCSE English Language syllabus? We have some course revision guides at the library, but I was told that they were out of date and don't reflect the syllabus. I understand that the syllabus will change for things like literature, geography, history, etc; where a different focus is put on parts of the subject over time, but how does that work for subjects like english language and maths? I have this vision that one year you learn how to punctuate but the next year you focus on tenses. I'm sure that can't be right so if someone can enlighten me I'd really appreciate it.
