the point i was trying to make is that if you eat more because you're hungrier because you're exercising more, then you're not going to lose weight.

even doing quite intense cardio doesn't really burn a huge number of calories. jogging on the flat for half an hour is probably going to get rid of 200 calories or less. running properly might get rid of 350 (depending on how much you weigh), but as a beginner you won't be able to work out at that level of intensity for half an hour.

if you burn an extra 200 calories a day by going to the gym for half an hour, and then eat the same as before, it would theoretically take you about 17-18 days to lose a pound of fat*. so just doing some exercise and maintaining your calorie intake at whatever it was before is a long a slow way to lose weight, and most people would probably give up quite quickly as they aren't seeing results. if you also cut your calorie intake at the same time as starting going to the gym then you'll see results more quickly and be more likely to stick at it.

(*obviously the numbers don't really work like that in practice as everyones' body functions in a different way, but there is no escaping the basic underlying principle that you have to be using up more calories than you are taking in to lose weight. )

Oh yes, I agree with all of that. I was merely making the point that if you change your lifestyle in a way that decreases the amount of exercise you get, you are likely to put on weight. Also, exercise can be helpful for those who eat too much for reasons of boredom rather than hunger, since being a bit hungrier may not make much difference to food intake, and spending time exercising is spending time where the biscuit tin is out of reach. ;)
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I have no idea what they are (apart from Lego), but I am wondering if they may be pop groups?

That bottom-right one reminds me vaguely of a cartoon series with a sergeant and his platoon.

Our bank manager spent 6 months on a diet of 700 calories a day to lose 4 stone. He said he couldn't be done with doing it gradually and wanted the results. Since then, he eats what he wants but runs 40k a week to maintain his weight. 'Nuff Respect to him.

I love my gym membership. I like classes. I don't always have the discipline to pound on a machine because I get bored. An hour of body combat is an hour of hard graft and there's someone at the front encouraging you and telling you what to do. Bit like personal training but cheaper coz it's included in the price. Most of the time I'm drinking coffee and waiting for the kids. It would be brilliant if the kids classes and adults classes were at the same times (I could go on a treadmill, but I'd rather blame the gym than me :o)

Round here there's a Zumba class on every street corner so you don't even need to join a gym if you don't want to. You just pay as you go. It's difficult when there's a new routine to learn but once you get the hang of it and can throw yourself in with gusto, it does become a workout.

I think I saw you write the answer for the bottom right and if I did, I still have no clue what that is. I know all the others, the third row on the right that was the second one I got, it's someone and someone, iyswim. Top right, I wonder if you might have grown up by then? You'll kick yourself otherwise.
