I only partially agree.
I am lucky enough to be alive thanks the the intervention and genorosity of one very well off friend, and looked set myself before falling ill to being set to do rather well for myself. I am very comfortable with wealth and extremely aware of what it can and cannot do. But there are other things to consider too. I bleat on about not having heating in my home, but effectively its a choice dh and i have made in our spending. To complain about it as a no choice thing when communicating with people who find themselves more truthfully without choice, or simply with lesser choice is not honest, its tactless. Also, while not appreciating the luck thaty we have, and to a greater extent you have, for the tremendous relief to some sorts of stress (though often the cause of other sorts of stress and responsibility) i believe we are not enjoying that hard work and good luck to its fullest.
Incidentally, i think part of my luck was in being a bit 'over nice' with my time and money both before being ill. My self made earnings before i was twenty three were impressive, and quickly the subtpstaioal part was consumed in private health provision. I needed a hell of a lot more that most millionaires have spare spent on me, and frankly, someone who was not 'nice' might not have been such a shock to the person who saw what was happening was beyond 'not right'.
I am not obcenely generous, if i were we would make do with far less and be far nicer as a result, but i am also aware that for each small financial loss we make not fiddling tax, or scrimping here or there, i have been repaid many times over in advance.....money can help people. I love money, and make no secret of the fact i like some very expensive things, and will do without several things other people consider basics to have them, but even though i like money i love even more what money can do.0 -
chewmylegoff wrote: »The martingale system is pretty useless unless you're really rich, as all you win is a profit equivalent to whatever your original stake was, and you need a lot of capital compared to your original stake to "guarantee" the profit.
of course, the problem is that you cannot guarantee the profit, as you either run out of capital or you hit the casino's limit. Wikipedia puts it rather elegantly: –
Originally, martingale referred to a class of betting strategies popular in 18th century France. The simplest of these strategies was designed for a game in which the gambler wins his stake if a coin comes up heads and loses it if the coin comes up tails. The strategy had the gambler double his bet after every loss, so that the first win would recover all previous losses plus win a profit equal to the original stake. Since a gambler with infinite wealth will, almost surely, eventually flip heads, the Martingale betting strategy was seen as a sure thing by those who advocated it. Of course, none of the gamblers in fact possessed infinite wealth, and the exponential growth of the bets would eventually bankrupt those who chose to use the Martingale. It is therefore a good example of a Taleb distribution - the gambler usually wins a small net reward, thus appearing to have a sound strategy. However, the gambler's expected value does indeed remain zero because the small probability that he will suffer a catastrophic loss exactly balances with his expected gain. It is widely believed that casinos instituted betting limits specifically to stop Martingale players, but in reality the assumptions behind the strategy are unsound. Players using the Martingale system do not have any long-term mathematical advantage over any other betting system or even randomly placed bets.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Hmm., at least with pasta you can have lots of different flavours, even if your sauces cannot be 'chunky' might you manage a risotto do you think? ring thje changes a little? Scrambled egg?
We can probably think of loads of things for variety if it would help you?PasturesNew wrote: »Soft exciting stuff ... try Tiramisu
I'd also go for packets of instant custard, instant semolina, some Angel Delight and trifles.
If you're nt eating a lot, you need calories - and there's little smooth/hot main meal food that won't lose it's buzz.... so have sweet stuff and enjoy it.
Soups will lose their shine if you can't enjoy a variety of breads with them - and bread's hard to swallow.... so just soup would make you feel cheated.
Sweets don't make you feel cheated about food.
One thing I have had a fair bit is trifle!:D Not had it for years, but the various sections offer different flavours as well as textures. Plus I love custard. Plus there are vitamins & calcium a plenty...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

yuck.
Other thing might be flavoured mash...with some beloved gravy lj, but also, with some cheese, some very soft cooked can get away without chewing much veg.....onions, celery and carrot well soften i used to blitz and hide in food for kids, buit would be good for getting veg into you if you have cheesy, gravyish mash and tiramisu!
If you can eat cold food then a penut butter and banana milkshake made with vanilla icecream, cheap is fine, is greater than the sum of its parts....and the banana and nuts are healthy, right? Better than it sounds, i promise.
Mash is being eaten, with various other veg.
Faggots (for meat, as they're soft).
Ice cream, in little bits here & there.
peanut butter is a no-go - nut allergy.LJ, are you having trouble swallowing? If so, I suggest that you get immediate help from a speech and language therapist. (Who would guess that my wife has just qualified?)
The reason for taking action sooner rather than later is that there can be a danger of inhaling some of your food if you are not swallowing properly. This can then lead to serious chest complications, especially if you are not strong enough to cough properly.
A speech and language therapist can help you to make sure that the food of the right consistency to reduce the risk of inhalation, that you are in the best possible position, and so on.
No issues swallowing. Chewing...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Not keeping up well ATM due to executive lifestyle, but best wishes to LJ for a quicker recovery than he expects.
:)
Tomatoes liquidise pretty well, so you won't have to give them up. Had a bloke here yesterday who swears he had tomatoes in May last year, but as he quoted Moneymaker I think that was likely b0ll0cks, as no one who knows about tomatoes grows those!!! :rotfl:
PS. Sold garden (£20k) Well pleased.
I obviously don't know tomatoes then - they're what I grow!
Last year I planted everything late, & we finished the last of our tomatoes off on christmas day!
Toms planted this year haven't sprouted yet. Neither have the peppers or cucumbers. However some peas have, as has the first lettuce, & I think there are beetroot prouts showing too! It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

Our tender package went out to all the buiilders we had shortlisted, including the chaps we have had doing the stuff up til now. The other builders had all heard we had had the pne firm in to do the emergency wall repair and the cheese room stuff and have now declined to tender.
So, we have either to start searching and meeting new people, go to people we had decided for one reason or other not to short list or just have the buiilders we have had put a price on it. I am not happy with option two or three, which only really leaves us with option one.
You've answered your own question though lir...:)It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

What I’ve got admitted publicly on here is that the version that I posted a few weeks back was a SEVERELY watered down version (as in I’ve left any foreign holdings, whether business/property out of the mix, and I earn a LOT more than I’ve stated, too.) Will post pre-audited pre-tax profit, up on April 7th (At Mar 13th on the accounts as we speak, and with 8 international subs, going through exchange rates for everything is a nightmare ), and may even do it on the DFW board to get back at them
CK
I don't do the DFW board. For 14 years, I've worked in advice work, including debt advice. I don't come here to talk shop, though have helped out friendly posters etc where I've felt it appropriate.
I'm trying to see if I've got this straight.
You've posted a SoA, as you're looking to set up repayments to your creditors.
In doing this, you've not included assets you hold abroad, and you've also not been honest as to the actual level of income you have? To the extent that you've put down a lower income than you actually get? This is all in order to reduce your payments?
Surely this is (at best) dishonest? Perhaps you should be using this undeclared income & foreign assets to pay off your creditors, rather than give them inaccurate information with which to reduce your payments to them? It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
