I just don’t like the thought of losing large amounts of money to the sharks. To win £1700 is more than the risk that I’d like to go to.

And good! The last thing we need is a load of gambling addicts on the DFW boards

At the same time, though, I get kicked for posting a SoA with net assets of about £1m. What I’ve got admitted publicly on here is that the version that I posted a few weeks back was a SEVERELY watered down version (as in I’ve left any foreign holdings, whether business/property out of the mix, and I earn a LOT more than I’ve stated, too.) Will post pre-audited pre-tax profit, up on April 7th (At Mar 13th on the accounts as we speak, and with 8 international subs, going through exchange rates for everything is a nightmare ), and may even do it on the DFW board to get back at them :D

Whilst I didnt find your SoA offensive I can see why it drew the reaction it got from some quarters. It is after all the debt free wannabe forum which is usually frequented by people who are as mad as a balloon and have spent £75k on credit and store cards and only earn £18k a year and say they can't cancel their sky subscription because they need it.

It's also more culturally acceptable to be a failure than a success in britain, so e.g. When you come out of an exam you should tell everyone else you think you failed even if you know you haven't. Same with money, it's all about understatement and being in your overdraft every month. No doubt you know all this already having been here for years!

Best job I ever had was a one day booking in about 1988. It was at the reception/office of the regional TV broadcaster. The building contained a photographer and a reporter, who I didn't see.

When I arrived, I was shown a TV remote and a pile of newspapers. I was told "here are today's newspapers if you want to read them; here's the TV control, just make sure it's on ITV if members of the public walk in". And then "If anybody comes in for Patrick's Pantry recipes they're in the bottom drawer".

I then sat there all day, reading the papers and watching the TV. One member of the public came in and the phone rang 3x.

Ok for a day, but as a long term job i would hate it, days would drag.

But yet, it's one of the strongest economies in the world. :o

Anyways, can we all please stop talking about gambling, systems don't work (no matter what some of you think and have an idea of), the casinos always win and we can't encourage people who can't afford to lose money to do something based on some of y'all advice.

My 'job' goes in fits and spurts too.....some weeks it can be quieter and other weeks, like last week and this, it can be hell for leather constant moving around.

Mind you, a quiet week still entails it being 24/7, just not quite at 200mph.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Silver, I know that free school transport is your personal bete noir, but have you seen this story:

    http://www.hertsad.co.uk/news/free_school_transport_axed_for_wheathampstead_pupils_at_harpenden_school_1_1331897

It'll be interesting to watch this one. I don't see how a journey of 3.43 miles can mysteriously become under 3 miles and safe.

I just don’t see how bunging up financial circumstances is so offensive to some. I originally found myself here due to a legal issue, and I’ve stayed, the problem with British culture is that noone is open and honest enough.

I’ve lived in the UK since June 1991 (back in the days that I was 8), and it’s something I’ve found difficult to adapt to; I’m a nightmare to work for (although noone in the office actually has the guts to actually say that to my face) and I actually like being the boss. It’s not about the money or the power, but knowing that I can sustain myself/my family/my employees/Paul from the pub who never has any money occasionally etc.

At the same time though, it’s like the £125 with flights; I haven’t got where I am through being particularly charitable, and IMO, if an airline wants to chuck me a free £125, I don’t really care.

Ah, but there was opportunity within that setup to do your own thing for some - and especially in these days of PCs/Internet. A writer could write a novel, a blogger could write and things.

I'm torn between shooting for "a proper job" once I move and "finding a doss". When you've spent a lifetime aiming, aiming, aiming ... only for it always to crash and burn it's easy to see how "finding a doss" might just be the right thing. What I do online isn't sustainable in the longer term as I can't keep up with the technology and the costs to keep up with the technology..... there's always companies investing in stuff that will put me further behind.... and I am not really a "work for yourself" type of investment/risk taker type. I'm a "do the job darned well" type.

Close to tax year end. 2011-2012 the figures don't look too bad because in April 2011 things were on the up-up-up and then I had to abandon my work at the end of May and it went along under its own steam pretty OK until the Google Panda update hit it 2-3x from about Sep-Oct and it's been in decline since then....

So, April-Aug it would look like I might achieve £25-30k/year easily.... and Dec-Mar it looks more like £5-6k/year.

So on paper I "did all right", but the reality is that 2012-2013 will bomb.... and right now I am living through those "bomb" months already, so I've been feeling that pinch for 4 months.

Because nobody likes a rich bugg4h whining :)

If you're there because you're earning sixpence a week and struggling, you don't want to hear the bleating of a rich bugg4h who is struggling to work out how they can keep their 4 holiday homes and Bentley running.
