A lot of religious people actively seek to convert people.
Is there not a contradiction in not wanting to be told what to think/do/say/believe, yet defending an organisation(?) which has these as its principle aims?
Lj, when you read on, you will find we have agreed to let the subject. Drop, i know you won't have seen that yet so its ME who is about to break our agreement.
No, that is not the purpose of religion. Smetimes that ends up happenng, but not uniformly, and sometimes this is dependant on which branch of what tree and at what time in uistory and where those branches if belief are, but ...no. I can understand why with such interpretation of all religion one would so pasionately dislike it though.0 -
I feel that in general, the idea of F&C is frequently better than the experience.
Finding a good chippy is worth its weight in gold.
I've had a fair few experiences in recent years where the F&C have been way too greasy, the chips slightly undercooked, & where I've felt the worse for wear the following day.
Round here, the options ain't great. There's a number I'll refuse to use. Only takes 1 bad experience to put me off.
That said, in the past couple of summers when I've gone off visiting places, we've generally found some good options. The one we tried in WSM last October was the best F&C I've had in a while - absolutely glorious, & huge portions! It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

I absolutely love sprouts, BUT they need to be cooked properly. I have often eaten undercooked sprouts in staff canteens and company x-mas parties, but nothing can beat a huge pile of well cooked sprouts, sauted in just butter or butter and bacon....dribble....dribble...:p0 -
I really wonder if its bad cooking of sprouts, and the past it sprouts that so many buy, that makes them unpopular.0

Pretty good F&C in Aus as a rule. As with most Aussie food, the general standard is quite high but you don't get the occasional absolute gems like you get in the UK.
The pies are bloody awful here though and an inexplicable national treasure.
i agree on the pies. i've had some horrendous fish and chips in australia as well, as bad as anything served up by the local chinese that does f&c on the side.
personally i found the food in australia to be pretty poor compared to london, but then i have spent the majority of my time in brisbane rather than sydney.
i also want to point out that any country where beef sausages are considered the norm and pork ones an oddity should probably be nuked.0 -

My favourite place near my parents puts a little lemon in the batter, its lovely. Finding sonewhere that produc a decent not grease retentive batter is hard, i also do not like the skin left on the fish.
We have a couple of new chip shops opened up, I will have to try them and report back. I have often wonderd why inland chippies are so dire  The best I have tried was in Mablethorpe, Monty's I think it was calledOver the past two years Gareth and Kelly Gordon, of Kingsley, Chester, have travelled across the UK sampling hundreds of battered cods, haddocks, pies and fish cakes, in their bid to transform the seaside favourite.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. From 100% to 120% presumably! No bacon sandwich for me in the morning then.chewmylegoff wrote: »i agree on the pies. i've had some horrendous fish and chips in australia as well, as bad as anything served up by the local chinese that does f&c on the side.

As I say, the average is better here IME. If you go to the supermarket or a take away here then, on average, you get better food.
There are problems there though. The supermarket food is better because it's ripe. That means it goes off quickly, especially with the humidity.
Beef sausages are simply wrong. My local butcher does some lovely pork 'English breakfast sausages'. The dodgy beef sausages that are ubiquitous really need to be compared with Walls bangers or something: very cheap and horrible.
The thing I really miss about British food is the odd really excellent thing. Those amazing cheeses from Neals Yard Dairy, bread from Degustibus or just about anything from St Johns Restaurant.0 -
Fish and chips in new zealand was better than anywhere ever imo.0
