ETA This took me so long to type that I hadn't refreshed the thread since before the calls to drop the subject. I'm more than happy to drop it. I'd been sort of hoping it would die down myself, for the last few days, but since it didn't I thought I'd better say something.
Brilliant, clear and passionately argued post Lydia. Thank you so much. I asked the question because I thought we could debate civilly and we have. The whole debate has really helped my understanding of the issue.
Thanks so much everyone for answering my questions. And as Lydia sort of suggested, its probably time to draw that one to a close. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Furthermore:
Hate crime - no
Patronising comments from men - only a few
Discriminatory comments for being a Christian - very few
Discriminatory comments for having been educated at an independent school - some
Being left out of stuff because couples prefer to socialise with other couples - some
Racist comments (I'm white) - none
Hate crime/racism - generally no, though if don't mention my Romany roots you'd be surprised how many people openly show prejudice.
Patronising comments from men - plenty, but I will bat back and give as good as I get
Comments re being a Christian - none, but I really resent being asked by my employers about my ethnicity, sexuality, religion etc. Bug out and mind your own business, I have no intention of becoming an equality box you can tick! Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Gorgeous.
Think I might have mentioned this before but we love them in curries which slow cook in the oven.
We have to count them out as MrsJB get very possessive of them!
Luckily the kids hate them so they're only divided in two.
As an aside, most other stuff the kids didn't like when they were young, well tough, we enforced them eating it and sure enough they mostly like it all now.
The only things we didn't "enforce" were sprouts and parsnips. No real reason other than I'd read somewhere there might be a genetic disposition to liking the strong taste of sprouts and MrsJB and myself would fight over the roast parsnips anyway
That and there were enough fights, at various times, with either/both of them over carrots, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, sweetcorn, and no doubt more which don't spring to mind0 -
Jb, as i understand it the genetic thing of sprouts is a cabbage family issue ans applies to all. I think it makes the bitter part taste stronger, not necessarily create a dislike? However, cabbage is a very useful vegetable this side of the globe. I am not a fan of kim chi, but i love cabbage.
I am not meant to eat a lot of it, but i find there are few rastier ways to have a roughage or fibre increase, especially alongside things than are meant to be bad for the gut....red meats.
Share the curried sprouts recipe, eh?0 -

OH hates sprouts so much they are banned here.
He remembers being virtually force fed to eat them at school dinners, where he promptly puked them back up over the dinner lady.

No definitive recipe.
Just any slow cooked curry with a good sauce to cook them in.
ie it's something you can come home to already cooked. Put it in the oven and set the timer.
Whether the sauce is a can of toms, or stock depending on choice that day (often with some creamed cocunut as well), add curry paste according to preference/taste, veg and meat and cook for 2 hours.
A curried casserole if you will.0 -
OH away last night and DS requested fish and chips from a shop, "because he'd never had that in his life!" OH has an aversion to cheap fast food, so it's never going to happen when he's home.
I've not eaten shop F&C since they wrapped in newspaper, so I agreed.
Firstly I couldn't believe the size of the portion of chips, we each ate about a quarter of a portion each. Secondly the fish was so, so greasy - even though I didn't eat the batter it tasted greasy. Thirdly my stomach didn't appreciate the foodand I was gently sipping mint tea all evening.
Not an experiment to be repeated, DS agreed it didn't live up to expectations.
It was meant to be the best place in the area. Cod & chips @ £5.30 each.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Luckily nothing got broken but I was eating through a straw for a couple of weeks and it was a long time before I would go anywhere on my own. I would classify this as a hate crime even if the law doesn't. (interestingly the law didn't care at all [the female copper said there was nothing wrong with me despite me being white as a sheet, clearly in shock, unable to respond to her questions, and dripping blood], although I was severely reprimanded by school for being off the premises without permission).
Other than that, being white, middle class and average means I have escaped most discrimination, but some people have been known to ridicule my beautiful grey hair.
There was a batty woman who wanted to set up a white, middle class protectionist thing like a minority group....she was the batty right wing nutter shown on a programme about immigration or something...becuase she was anti immigrant. They ran dna profiles on those featured and she turned out to have a very heavy gypsy influence and iirc was totally in denial. While i think she was a twerp, i do see what she was getting at. And i think your experience is an example of it.0 -

We love f&c, but they are a rarity, and finding a good one is hard. They are more than £5.30 here though, or anywhere i have had them in recent years. My favourite place near my parents puts a little lemon in the batter, its lovely. Finding sonewhere that produc a decent not grease retentive batter is hard, i also do not like the skin left on the fish.0
