I've learned from experience that some unis never make offers if you miss a grade -shame there's not a big database of this kind of info. Shouldn't the internet step up and fill its boots!

the student room is pretty much the mecca on the internet.

I need to write a proposal but
    a) i'm tired
    b) it's 22:19

However, it needs to be done by Monday :(

viva, you would have been proud of me on Tuesday. :)

I was teaching yr10. We were just finishing the topic on the electromagnetic spectrum, and had to discuss harmful effects of different parts of it, including UV and skin cancer, natch. I was able to remember your ABCDE of moles, and tell them about it.

    Yay!!!! Brilliant! Thanks!

How does the offer compare to the other one and to her predictions?

We are waiting til after the exam results in March (for the exams this week) to decide which offers will be accepted.

Its a strategic game. If he accepts an offer that he misses by one grade there is a chance that the uni could still accept him - but they might not. On the other hand if he rejects the top offer, then he won't have a chance of going there. So as part of the strategy he took more exams this time round to get them out of the way and to give a better idea of his final grades.

My first choice was a uni requiring AAA which I missed by one grade. I thought I would walk in regardless but it didn't work out that way. What went wrong for me was that there were only 10 places on the course. Others at my school missed their offers for the same uni by five or six grades and still got in (to the same department as well!)

I was right effed off at the time. So anyway, it's more of a gamble for small oversubscribed courses, but I suppose that was pretty obvious without me saying it!

Parents evening for youngest tonight...and it was not a bad night all told.

His geography teacher 'wants' him to do the subject at GCSE, apparently he has been trying out various students on GCSE based work and assessments recently and youngest was one of the test subjects and he passed with flying colours, scoring at what would be a grade B in a real GCSE.

RE was not so good but that really didn't surprise me, it is not his interest base and if his interest is not sparked, he tends not to do well....this has not been helped by his support being removed and a not so understanding about autistic people teacher.

Maths, English, Science, French and History were all very good reports as was PE even though he does not actually do PE as the head of PE will not allow the gradual change over of uniform to kit but he does help get the equipment ready and organise people...apparently he is very skilled and enthusiastic at that.

His English, ICT, art/DT and drama teachers all got a shock as he finally (yes finally!), showed them what he has been working on at home with his reviews, inventions, animations and script writing...they had no idea whatsoever and all were very impressed indeed.

I felt awful however, still got this horrible cold and by the end of the evening, was at dropping down stage.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Ican't afford one of those. Good one.

    Reminds me of: -

It all began with an iPhone...

Tablets and phones are fine, but they aren't great for Excel. My problem is that most of what I need to do requires a keyboard and Excel. Because I use lots of columns I also need a big screen. At this point it gets very expensive:(:(.

How do you teach maths to your kids? I just get numbers - they all make sense and i can not understand how for example fractions could even need explaining so i have absolutely no idea to to explain it to my DD.

Of course AAB in our day is worth about 6A*s nowadays CMLO. Given the cost of uni these days I think my DKs will be expected to make their fortne via Hello and Big Brother.

I am working with a bunch of extremely intelligent young grads and it is annoying, not just becase they are so bright and well adjusted but also because the have conversations about how yong some of their colleagues are because they were born in the 90s which just makes me feel so ancient.
    I think....

    Err... what's CMLO please?

About explaining maths.... You have to find something that the kid is interested in that you can talk the numbers with. Food, friends, journey to school, cooking, shopping, toys, pocket money, etc.

What in particular is she having trouble understanding?
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)

That's what DH does with my nephews, I think you may be similar Lydia. He's very good at talking physics and maths, whether its how a plane flies (physics) or how to get the best bargains with pocket money (maths). I'm hopeless at that type of stuff, but I can at least find a book to help:o.

Quite possibly you learnt it all differently and so you don't want to confuse them.

Starting point is to ask them to explain it to you. That way you see what they understand and what they don't and can hopefully fill in the gaps.

To explain fractions, start with a cake and segments of it. Cut out if necessary. You want to show what one third of a cake will look like, then you can progress to one third being two sixths and if you add one third to a sixth you get a half. Then show why that works numerically.

(OK I've forgotten their ages, that was possible too much for a 3 year old!)
