DH and I have just spent an hour or so trippin' down memory lane and recalling our favourite ever toys. This was mine (not the exact set - this is an earlier version - but you'll get the gist):

DH had a wooden castle that we can't find a pic of anywhere.

    What were yours?

One issue I have about food/cooking is that unless you've had a good one you can't really cook it yourself as you've no idea if yours is rubbish or not. There's a video on youtube where an American 'top' chef shows how to make Yorkshire pudding.... I think it's got to be one of the worst I've ever seen. It's laughable - he's clearly never had an actual, proper Yorkshire pudding in his life, so therefore has no idea how abysmal his is.

Worst Yorkshire Pudding Ever Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSAgumGKtwo - jump to 2mins41secs if you're in a hurry.

I also realised the other day, when I heard some people on the telly saying that pasta was gorgeous (something like Ramsey's Kitchens from Hell, Chef turnaround type of programme) .... I've never actually had fresh pasta, ever. I eat pasta (spaghetti, macaroni, etc), but I've always said "it's OK, but I don't get it - and for a meal I'd feel cheated if I ate out and was served pasta". Maybe pasta's one of those things that I've never had so had no idea that it's actually nice. I tell people who have never had an indian curry before that an indian curry in a restaurant/takeaway is NOTHING like a chilled meal, or deli counter meal, or frozen one - because maybe there are some people who have only ever had supermarket ones and never had an indian. Again, unless you've had "the real thing", you've no idea how it really should taste - and so you can't cook it at home and know that you've nailed it.

I try to. When I used to visit the US a lot I found that most people kept a drawer of 1c coins which were useless. I used to use the streetcars to travel around New Orleans and they took coins only so my mates used to give me bags of the stuff to use up.

Another thing I saw there I rarely saw here was a take a penny give a penny cup next to the till so that people would hand in a spare cent rather than carry it away but could pick up a cent if they were a coin short for the right money.

I once studied at a uni that was heavily biased to engineering, and we once as a thought experiment tried to work out how much it would cost to make the new pound coins that were newly being made. We costed it at 2p each which turned out to be roughly the cost of making any coin, including 1p pieces. Soom after 1/2 p coins were withdrawn, and we could see why. :D

    What were yours?

One of mine was a Triang train. I used to spend whole afternoons designing elaborate crash scenarios for it. :D

It's still not worth much though.....£30 in good nick, maybe.

I liked the smell of little electric trains. Always lots of tiny sparks and interesting hums from their motors, or occasionally smoke, if seriously abused. Yes, I inhaled! :rotfl:

PS there was an earlier building system than yours, called Bayko. It utilsed strong wire rods as a framework into which plastic panels were slotted. The wire was tough and just right for poking little eyes!

    Found it:

My Dad bought me a train set for my 4th birthday. Hornby 00 gauge, mounted on a special board and then put in the loft. I don't think I ever got to play with it. I was only allowed to watch, and look as impressed as you can look when you're 4 and not allowed to play with your present. It's quite funny looking back.

ETA: Bayko looks cool. I would have enjoyed playing with that too. In fact there's probably a little part of me that still would:o.
