It's not THAT cold here. Colder than usual, but not frozen/icy/solid. Gulf Stream FTW.

I was outside at about 3am this morning and could hear a lone sheepie bleating - it sounded like it was about 400 yards away.

So pleased my sheepies went to their home in the valley before this started.

[STRIKE]Money[/STRIKE] Firewood for old rope this year :D (if we conveniently forget the wrestling them out of the fences bit!)

This house saw our first attempts at a real log fire.

We found that supposedly "seasoned" wood was not truly seasoned and made alarming cracking sounds when burning.

Then I found cylindrical fire logs made from compressed wood chip, but they didn't burn for long and didn't look authentic.

    This year we bought these:

    http://www.duraflame.com/products/fire-logs/xtra-6lb-fire-logs-for-wood-burning-fireplaces

Works about about £2.50 a time, burns for about 4 hours and produces decent heat, doesn't crackle or pop or go out and looks authentic. I haven't a clue how that compares with firewood, but it is very effective for little effort.

Not much GS influence in Mid Devon even with Spring tides....:p

Yeah, that's what I don't want to hear at 3 am when we have sheep, especially if it sounds only 100 yards off.

I must go and learn my Panto lines. I get to try out my costume tonight, but as I'm only a serf, it's not wildly exciting. (For all the SSSS's benefit, I'm back to large ladies' clothes again!)

Always a serf; never a Knight or a Nobleman. Pah! :(

I can't remember the context, but that reminds me of an old saying/ditty/punchline: Once a king, always a king, but once a [k]night is enough.

It probably came from a Frankie Howard sketch, or Benny Hill, in the 70s.

I love the crackle of a fire....not of spitting or unseasoned wood, but a proper crackle. You can get candles with wooden wicks that make a quiet crackle to replicate this.

My sister got a clean test back from her post cancer treatment checks. :). I don't know how often these tests are done. Good news, huh!

I think the tests are done less often as time passes.

‘Time Team’ archaeologist Mick Aston has quit the series after the show hired a former model as co-presenter
    .
So time-team have hired a bit of fluff to boost the ratings, outrageous how could they icon8.gif then I read this.
Ochota, who joined the 19th series of the show, has a degree in anthropology and archaeology from Cambridge University. [Daily Telegraph]
