I don't really speak to him and he works, so he can't drive me around and he won't put money towards a cheap motor.

He should be paying towards your little one though

Honestly though, unless he funds it, you cant afford a car
ATM, I own my 4 bed house outright, I temp and have income from property and I cant afford (!) a car at this time (Will change in about 3 months tho) - cars are a LUXURY these days, serious...

Frankly, I am astounded by the rudeness and arrogance of many of the replies on here! I probably agree that it appears that the OP may not be able to afford to obtain a new car, but many of you should be thoroughly ashamed of your replies to her.

I feel sorry for the OP, she only asked for a little advise and theres a lot of people in here moaning at her.

I'm also on benefits (JSA) and am looking to buy a new used car, because there has been zero help available i've had to save up £100 per month for over a year just to be nearer to getting one. OP if your on benefits you could try applying for a Budget Loan, you can get up to £1000 as a single person or perhaps more since you've got a child, also have you recieved the £500 grant?

You wouldn't need something too expensive around the £1.5 - £2k mark would do nicely, specialy if you got a small car like a Fiesta.

But how could you possibly repay the loan AND run a car? I'm worried you're seriously underestimating the true cost and will end up in loads of trouble.
    Can I help?

Huh? I didn't even mention a loan.... unless you mean the budget loan which comes out of your benefits before you recieve them with 0 interest so not really a proper loan, I took out a £500 budget loan earlier this year, its costing me £2 per week untill paid off with no interest, I'm sure if the OP did that they could afford £8 per month

Also I own a car and run it now so I do know how much it costs, belive me as being 23 years old and paying huge amounts of car insurance.

The op has asked a simple question and got a barrage of personal questions and insults thrown at her!

Accusing the girl of being irresponsible because she asked if there was a loan available to get her from a to b with a baby is disgusting.

There is no loan available to people on benefits other than very high interest loans like provident, which are a bad idea, you say you already have a car, so you are paying fuel, tax insurance etc, and I am sure are aware of all the costs involved.

I am sure how to ring an ambulance has been taught in junior schools around the country for the past 40 years, the op is 19 not 9!

There are interest free loans available from the social fund, Budgeting loans range from £100 - £1,500 with weekly payments of £1-4 coming out of your benefits.
  • im pretty sure budgeting loans are not available so that people on JSA can run about in cars

people wonder why some are not happy on this thread, wake up, jsa pays 53 quid a week, now i couldnt survive alone on that amount let alone run a car

Slightly off topic but my local council has refused to give a friend of mine £13 housing benefit because she runs a car.

Their justification is that they say it cost £1000 a year to run a car - tax insurance petrol maintenance etc - so if she sold the car she wouldn't need the extra £13.

Personally if she gave the 40 a day up she would fair much better financially, but she says she doesn't need to <confused smiley>

    OP
I hope things go well for you and your baby and you do get money for her from the father, regardless of whether he sees her or not, and the saving goes well too. As slow and frustrating as it may seem it really is safer to take one step at a time :)
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

I totally agree with you but there are tops ups of child tax credits, child benefit etc and then there is housing benefit, not forgetting those who are on DLA. As an example I know someone who is on IS, DLA high rate care, and ESA none work group - the IS covers this - and they have approx £700 a month coming in. This excludes the council tax benefit and housing benefit, so it's not a small amount, but to have only the bare minimum must be a nightmare

£8 can be allot of money when you have a baby to care for who also needs things buying.
