You can't have had much in the way of savings then. I assume you got everything second hand or from freecycle and the like, as you can't afford to be picky in your situation. Beggars can't be choosers as they say.

You mention you are studying - what for, and where? Have you asked at the school / college / university if there is any help available? There also might be local charities that can help, if you are still in education.

Because my local college doesn't have a creche, I can't take my daughter to college with me. So I had to buy a course to do at home, I am studying a data entry course. Yeah I did buy my stuff second hand from friends and family.
  • Argh! Can we stop the sniping comments! We all make our own choices and live with the consequences of those.

    Onwards and upwards.

OP, as I said earlier, give it a go at saving a portion of your benefits money each month (or is it weekly they are paid? sorry I have no idea!) whilst you are waiting to be rehoused. I can understand the spend on the bubba from your savings before, but you may be able to build a bit back up which will give you some funds towards a better car too.

Thankyou, I'm definitely going to give it a go to save some of my benefits as even if I didn't need to sort out my car, it's good to have savings.

So wheres daddy in all of this? Can he not drive you around? Put x towards a cheap motor?

I don't really speak to him and he works, so he can't drive me around and he won't put money towards a cheap motor.
  • Does he not even want to see his daughter??

  • Realistically a car costs at least 280 a month minimum (100 loan, 100 insurance for a 19 year old, tax 10, petrol 70). Benefits for 1 adult and one child are about 130 a week so 520 a month which means that over half your money would go on the car. It's just not an option until you have more money, sorry.

:) Unfortunately my parent's have no money as my dad has found out that he has to go on disability allowance so my step-mum can barely afford to run her car let alone help me with one. And my mum is a single-mother herself, on two jobs and trying to pay off a mortgage. So that's a no-go area. I am waiting on my local council to give me a house closer to town. So thankyou but I have thought of the options :)

Can you not understand why your attitude cheeses people off?

You wont get a loan in your situation.

    So you'll either need to
    1. manage without a car
    2. obtain employment so you can afford a car.

With your little one so young I would guess 2. is out for a while, so 1. it is for now.

I am a bit surprised this forum is being ageist. There are plenty of single parent 40 year olds, not just 19 year olds. If you have an issue with someone claiming benefits then, providing they are not doing it fraudulently then your criticism would be better placed at the foot of an MP. The benefits system ridicules people who work full time for a pittance. That is the real issue. I would probably be better off not working as I spend so much out on rent/travel/council tax that would all be free. Lucky I like my job.

To OP do you live in a village? If so there may be a community car scheme you could use for getting to doctor/ clinic appointments. In an emergency 999 will be fine with a child involved. When mine were little I didn't have a car and took one around on in a bike seat from about the age of 1. Before that I walked everywhere and they were in a pram. My mum couldn't drive and she always walked 4 miles each way to the shops and took 2 children with her.

I doubt you could afford to run a car and pay for repairs. I have to help my daughter out as she can't afford to get hers repaired ( can afford ins, tax etc). Before anyone says anything she is chronically ill and would be effectively housebound if she didn't have a car. Also very few buses where she is and too far to walk to the bus stop for her.

Are there any other young mums in the area? Maybe you could trade babysitting for them taking you shopping or something?

Just some ideas you might find helpful.
  • I feel sorry for the OP, she only asked for a little advise and theres a lot of people in here moaning at her.

I'm also on benefits (JSA) and am looking to buy a new used car, because there has been zero help available i've had to save up £100 per month for over a year just to be nearer to getting one. OP if your on benefits you could try applying for a Budget Loan, you can get up to £1000 as a single person or perhaps more since you've got a child, also have you recieved the £500 grant?

You wouldn't need something too expensive around the £1.5 - £2k mark would do nicely, specialy if you got a small car like a Fiesta.

Dear oh dear. I work, and just like you I have zero help available to buy another car. So I'll have to save as well.
