"All work over here", which is what you said is significantly different to "May work over here on a mobile".

It would be pretty stupid to try dialling '911' here in an emergency on the off chance that your phone recognised the number and did something sensible with it.

Much better just to remember and use the standard '999' number.

It was brought in because not everyone who drives or owns a mobile over here is from here, tourists, migrant workers etc., only major differences from 112 and 999 are it won't work without credit in your phone and it needs a sim inserted.

What you did wrong is not call the Police there and then! The second this man starting acting unreasonably you get your phone out and dial 911 & explain to the operator you are being threatened and require immediate assistance!

The problem with what you did is, if the guy did have insurance and was playing the insurance game, he would contact them first leaving you looking like a guilty party for not reporting an accident.

I was going to say the mistake you made was not to punch him! But then thats probably not a very constructive way of dealing with is, I guess? :)
I know and when I went down to the PS the young policeman was OK about me not reporting it straightaway given the circumstances. The worst thing was the aggression of the couple. Tattoos, bleached straggly hair, overweight and very menacing and that was the woman!!! I was terrified. The other thing was that I had left my mobile at home as well....

All in all a very frightening experience. You know those US army films and the sergeant is shouting in recruits faces - well thats what it was like.

If I had got out of my car and stretched up to my full height of 6' 6", as broad as a tank, a big red beard and a voice like Brian Blessed I wonder what they would have done. As it is I am 5'3" - small but perfectly formed!!
No wonder they thought they were onto a winner!!!!
