I never assume anyone is going to do anything any more. People either don't indicate or they forget to cancel their indicators after they have made their manoeuver. I'm with HOUSE MD "Everybody lies".
Don't grow up. Its a trap!

    Peace, love and labradors!

there was lots out like that too ive noticed bus drivers are the same they just trundle along (very slowly) so i asked one couldt he go faster he said he could but his tea break was half an hour away and he didnt want to have to do another run before hand

The reason why bus drivers drive slow is because they run to a timetable. I'm sure you would not be best pleased if you were at the stop on time only to find that the bus had already passed earlier.;)

I was told: don't assume all other drivers are idiots but assume any driver may do something idiotic. Even non-idiots make the occasional mistake and assuming all others are idiots leads to a lack of respect and confrontational driving.

But the gist is much the same: Be prepared for anything.

You're quite wrong there....It's Be prepared for the stupid!

Although over here where I live,it's not Sunday drivers that hog the roads as much,it's cycling clubs. The coast road iv quite windey & the are few places to pass safely, unfortunatly, these cycle clubs go out for a ride, oblivious of the cars behind them, often cycling 3 abreast.I was once stuck behind a queue of cars behind a pack of cyclists & behind me was a bus & an ambulance.Even when the ambulance put the blues on,they still couldn't pass safely due to the queue that had built up between them & the cyclists. If they had been cycling single file,as per the Highway Code, then the queue wouldn't have built up as much & the traffic would have been moving at a near normal flow.
Incidentally,I was almost hit by one of these cyclists last week when I was crossing the road, the traffic light was red for the cars but this idiot decided it was ok for him to go against the green man..he must've came round the corner at some pelt as he wasn''t seen when I looked left or right & he missed me by a foot or so,going downhill!
  • It certainly sounds like the road conditions were okay.

Not sure why my brain missed that part. But thanks for pointing it out. Please ignore my stupid question then :)

That's what I have read and seems sensible for a reciprocating engine (without electrical transmission).

For a vehicle with electric transmission, as slow as possible, presumably.

The automatic transmissions have overdrive OD that selects a higher gear to maximise fuel economy.

The typical Sunday driver is long gone, they are just on the roads every day now.

Driving standards are definitely poorer now.

I don't think it is just one thing that is the cause, more a mixture of several reasons.

One being less traffic police & more reliance on static cameras. Back in the day one was always wary as cops would be parked up but I rarely see this now.

In any case, more traffic shouldn't mean less competent drivers, maybe the opposite.

If 1 in 10 drivers are bad. The more traffic on the roads, the sooner 9 good driver go past you.

Though like you say probably many other reasons as well.

I was once hit on a roundabout by one of the whiplash nerchants. I have never been so scared in my life. They hit my right rear (!) and forced me off the road in the middle of a roundabout. They (a man and a woman) jumped out and started screaming at me. Calling me a murderess and killing their five childrens mum and dad and swearing and in-my-face. I burst into tears and started shaking like a leaf. They then forced me out of the car. Give us your money to get our car repaired. I noted at that point that their car had dents, scratches and deep scrapes on every corner of their car. I gave them my phone number and they then got back into their car and drove off. Two nights later I got a call demanding money as he was off sick with whiplash injuries. Then I just went straight to the police (where I should have gone in the first place). They rang the guy and told him firmly and politely to go through the proper channels of insurance. He was known to the Police, and they knew he had no insurance. The point I am making is that I STILL dont know what I did wrong - driving wise. I get really scared now at every roundabout and although I indicate correctly I still feel as though someone is going to get aggressive and toot and flash their lights and then I would be pulverised by some horrible nasty screaming person....

I am an expreienced driver but this one really really shook me to the core.. It wasnt even a Sunday either - it was a Thursday!!

What you did wrong is not call the Police there and then! The second this man starting acting unreasonably you get your phone out and dial 911 & explain to the operator you are being threatened and require immediate assistance!

The problem with what you did is, if the guy did have insurance and was playing the insurance game, he would contact them first leaving you looking like a guilty party for not reporting an accident.

I was going to say the mistake you made was not to punch him! But then thats probably not a very constructive way of dealing with is, I guess? :)
