Do all the people who undertake long commutes earn particularly good wages?

I wonder if the problem lies with the train itself. It can be either

    or

Not the most comfy trains granted but they usually work. Lastly I can't believe that you can't get to Leeds station from East Leeds by public transport before 6.45am. Go to bed on time!

When I am in work (which as you know I am not at the moment), I have to commute all over the bloody country (England and Wales). Can I have a prize please? I have never cited case law from Loughborough, and my win rate is 97% - probably because I have never cited anything from Loughborough!

when you want an award HR is handing out you have a bigger problem than travel :rotfl:

Heh - when you are on sabbatical and the damned book isn't writing itself, you take whatever you can get.

But the good news is that after several escalated complaints - I have my Merrkat:)

You can't get into Leeds on public transport from my bit of East Leeds before 6.45am - the first bus is at 6.24am and you would arrive at the station at 7.05am. If you live in one of the villages in East Leeds, you would have to walk a couple of miles to catch a number 40 or a 56 if you want to be in town that early.

If you live in one of the rural villages of East Leeds that is true - it is also a choice. If you choose to live in a somewhat isolated area, and then to not drive or have some form of transport of your own then the limitations on you are things that you have chosen. It still does not make a distance of 25 miles an unreasonable distance to travel - it simply means that you must make more effort of your own to address the shortcomings of rural transport. If the OP were to lose their job or give it up, then the JobCentre would expect them to be available for work in a much wider radius that 25 miles.

My wages haven't been particularly fantastic the last year or so, BUT by taking a job which involves some regular travel all over the place, and showing a willingness to just grit my teeth and get on with it, I've gained experience in a sector which I've never worked in (in a somewhat similar job to what I did before), now I have stayed here a year, in March I move to a much MUCH better paid job with just as long a commute but less choatic travelling (more stable).

if I hadn't been willing or able to do that for this year, my earning potential would have been slashed accordingly.

i suppose you could say that i've done the following (note that i don't do any of the following jobs IRL tho):
    1. Accountant in banking
    2. Accountaint in a circus
    3. Assistant sweeper upper in the lion tent at the circus (massive pay cut) via connections and knowedge of circus
    4. Lion tamer
And that's how I went from being an accountant to a lion tamer. I'm at stage 3 at my current employer - in March I move to stage 4 (my long term ideal job, with a huge salary increase).

so anyway for me, the travel hasn't paid me mega bucks.

but it has opened up opportunities which otherwise wouldn't have been available.

that is often more important than a temporary few k extra pay on your salary.

i'm a big fan of playing the long game when it comes to my career - always have an end goal in mind, and never take your eyes off it. temporary pains like crap bosses, crap pay or shoddy working hours can be endured as long as there's an exit plan involved.

    that's what i think anyway! :)
