No I can't prove it and neither can you. Not unless you or I get the commuting figures for every working person in the UK.

Seeing as I linked you to the average commute time it's pretty easy to work out that you're wrong. Unless you can explain a 47 minute average, some other way?

I get two buses to work every morning and the total commute varies between 30-40 minutes

personally I think there may be some confusion between "many" and "majority" and it is possible to mave a minority who are still many in number.

That said, OP should get a motorscooter.

  • As an adjective - 'many' is just a large number. As in 'many people'. To say that 'not many' people do something means that only a few do it....and as SG's stats show, that's clearly not the case.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I take it you are not a mother? It would make me desperately sad to have a 6-month old baby and have to be away from them for that length of time.

I'm a mother, and I went back to work at 4 months and 5 months respectively.

It's no sadder than a father having to work fulltime in the primary breadwinner job when his son or daughter is 6 months old, is it? ;)

I hated going back to work when my son was 2 weeks old. I feel I have missed so much of him growing up from being at work but I still see and spend time with him everyday

I had a similar commute, but could never guarantee that I could get away at 4.30pm and take work home - in fact would often end up working later than 8pm in the evening and still take work home. It didn't take long before a real resentment set in and I moved on to a role much closer to home. My sleep patterns are still highly disturbed 4 years on.

I'm a father. It's because I make such a long commute that allows my partner to go back to work part-time and spend more time bringing up our son. I'm also considering compressing my hours. I'd work 2 hours extra a day Monday to Thursday and have Friday off, so that I can look after my son and we won't have to get shafted for more nursery fees than were necessary.

That would mean I'd leave the house at 06:00 and not get home until around 20:00.

I need to work to keep my family. There are no jobs in my field in my local area, and we can't afford to move to London and be closer to work.

Yes, but you're using this 47 average to make generalised assumptions about other commutes. That's not proof.

As I said, I can't prove it, but neither can you.

Exactly. All I'm saying is, at the end of the day no one has "proof" in this situation.
