No. I'm not. I'm a 29 year old graduate with a good job and a good salary. I have been working for large, multinational engineering and oil/gas companies for the last 5 years. And again, I have never, to my knowledge, had a colleague who has had to travel for 2 hours + to get to work.

Then I'm just as shocked, in the opposite way, as you appear to be.

I'm not doubting your words, but if that's true, you've only ever worked with a bunch of lucky sods, frankly.

For the record, my uncle in particular hates his commute, but because of their kids and the area, they decided to stay put when he got a new job. People do make their own beds, etc etc... and as long as the salary can cover the commuting costs I guess good luck to them.

It's certainly not something I enjoy on the days I have to do it (those days I have to use the train, too, because of a lack of parking at the other end - miserable!).
  • The difference here is that the op has not chosen to pick a job with a 2 x 2 hour daily commute. It has been imposed on her by her employer. Not really the same as those who weigh everything up and make an informed choice.
There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.

Her employer is allowed to move their staff to any office the business requires, I would bet my bottom dollar it's stipulated in the contract as well.

Nothing ACAS, or anyone for that matter, can say to change the fact the OP's team will be located in one place.

The OP needs to decide whether they make the commute and keep a job, or don't do the commute and find work elsewhere.

Ooh, not so long ago; nobody did. Now its' not 'many'. In another hour we will all be doing it.

Where did I say "nobody" did?

I said many people don't, which is the same as "not many"

I don't think you know what you are saying, do you?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Yes. I do know what I'm saying.

I will repeat it for you again (slowly), please try to follow.

I did not say and do not think that "nobody" outside London has to commute 2 hours each way to get to work.

Someone said that "many" people do. I disagree with this, hence the phrase that "not many" people have this commute outside London.

Surely you must understand now? It's not hard.

No - what you are saying is that you have never met anyone that does.

You also have no knowledge of what goes on in the rest of the country so you are pretending that you know lots about something of which you know nothing; and in order to do so - you are trying to bluff your way out of a corner.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

    course it's hard.

    Somebody said many people commute.
    You said 'no they don't',
Then you said that not many people outside London do a long commute
Now you're saying that you disagree with it. Not that it's fact, just that you don't think so.

So even you can't decide on your answer :)

Incidently you didn't say 'many people don't' nor did you say 'not many'. you said 'no they don't'. They in the plural sense.

    It's like saying

    Those ice creams are strawberry

    No they aren't.

    Oh.

Well, some are, but some aren't.

Oh, but you just said they aren't strawberry

    Oh I meant some aren't

Oh, why didn't you say some aren't then?

Well, I just don't know what I'm talking about do I? I've never seen a strawberry ice cream so I am an unreliable witness.

You claimed I said that "nobody" does.

    I didn't.
