You can setup googlemail as gmail in OE as it will accept both versions so you can have xxxxxx@googlemail.com or xxxxxx@gmail.com when setting up in Outlook Express and also tell friends your address is xxxxx@gmail.com even though its googlemail.com as it will still reach its destination..0 -
Been with Googlemail for a couple of months, and yes, it is impressive. But I'm wary of possible wider personal security issues with its keeping of emails on its server.
I also have problems understanding some of the instructions. For instance, I just can't for the life of me set up another email address. It asks for my name (presumably my account name, or new name - though i've tried both) and for the new email address. I put in newname@googlemail.com and click 'next'. It then says it has sent a verification code to the new address address, but all that arrives in my inbox is an email saying that delivery to the address failed.0 -

I live in France, when I signed to GMail, I gave my location as the USA on the application. Et voila - I have a GMail account, should work in the UK too!;)
I just invited a friend to gmail through a french yahoo address and she has.....@gmail.com.
I think that googlemail.com is only the UK, not Europe. Certainly not Fr anyhow.
I presume that (if you were so minded) that it would read your connection as in the UK & googlemail you even if you set up and then invited yourself to gmail from a yahoo.fr address for eg.
You could be nice to someone french - or american - and they can set it up for you :-)0 -

So when will Google get rid of the "Send invitations" box? Pretty pointless now.the Money Saving Expert team do not moderate forums, so if you see something that shouldnt be here report it! :beer:0

My e-mail address ends with @googlemail.com.
However, when I send an e-mail to @gmail.com it still get sent to this address.
I assume that therefore this is here to stay and I can give everyone my username@gmail.com address?0 -

I still have the send invites box on all of my accounts. Is the account you're looking at a new one? I seem to remember it takes a while for the send invites box to show up on new accounts... days or even weeks.
As far as the confusion that people are having with the gmail/googlemail question, think of it like redirecting your post when you move house. You tell the Post Office that you want all your mail to the old address diverted to the new address. That's exactly the same principle that Google is using... sending a mail to xxxxx@gmail.com will go to the same place as one sent to xxxxx@googlemail.com... they're one and the same "physical" place (ie. the xxxxx email account), just that one goes directly there, the other is redirected from googlemail to gmail. For the more technical out there, clicking the following links will show a tracert for both domains... they end up at the same IP address.
http://dns-tools.domaintools.com/?q=gmail.com&m=traceroute
http://dns-tools.domaintools.com/?q=googlemail.com&m=traceroute
The other thing to note as j davies and others mention is that they are interchangeable... so using xxxxx@gmail.com rather than xxxxx@googlemail.com means less typing
