Another nifty function is that you to set up different ‘alias’ addresses...
It works like this: any e-mail sent to your.username+any.alias@gmail.com will arrive in your inbox. So if you give them the e-mail address money.saver+freeshampoo@gmail.com it will be delivered to money.saver@gmail.com If the company starts spamming, you can set up a filters to automatically direct these messages to Trash.

But was is there to stop them just to remove +any.alias from your address and spam you directly?

I run a mailing list, and I can tell you now it's not worth looking through the list for stuff like that...

As previously mentioned, the online storage provided by Google is called Gspace. Although I had downloaded it previously, it was catching-up with this thread that inspired me to spend some time 'fiddling' with it today!

I have now uploaded all the important files/docs/pictures that I had previously emailed to myself (my own workaround for online storage) and have also discovered one or two new [to me] features!! :D

I have uploaded my music files and will now be able to listen to my own music wherever I am accessing the internet - great for work where we are often subjected to either 'supermarket-stylee' music, poor local radio or just-as-bad national radio!!

I have set-up a couple of extra Gmail accounts (<mynameGspace01@gmail.com>, <mynameGspaceshared@gmail.com>, etc, etc) into which I have put photo's of the kids. I have also sent the log-in details for the shared account to the likes of grandparents so they can see the kids pics etc. I know that this sort of thing is already available with the likes of Webshots, Photobucket and Google's own Picassa, to name a few, but being able to administrate it all via my Google desktop etc makes it simple.

There is a simple pop-up tutorial here that explains things in a easy to follow method.

I'm now off to explore my way around the Google Apps for my domain!!

Google’s free e-mail service, Gmail, is now open to all. The accounts were previously available by invitation-only, now, for the first time, the service is open access.

Of course there's nothing stopping you doing this alongside your existing email account.

What’s all the fuss about?

Its main strength is its humungous 2GB storage capacity, compared with Yahoo’s 1GB (though upgrade to Windows live and it also give you 2GB) and Hotmail’s 250MB. Plus, many techies (including the MSE ones) believe its spam filters are considerably better than other email providers.

Other bonuses include the ability to search all of your e-mails, and e-mails with the same subject line being automatically grouped together. The fact it makes it much easier to log into other Google applications, its fast, automatically adds email address to contacts, you can download a small piece of software so you can view it from your mobile.

Is it better than the other free email services? Well now you can try it - you can decide :) (and experienced Gmailers please leave your feedback in the discussion below)

A sneaky trick for freebie/competition grabbers

Another nifty function is that you to set up different ‘alias’ addresses, which you can give out to specific people. This is very handy if you sign up for lots of freebies and competitions and are worried that those companies might spam you.

Update: Want to use Gmail/Other online emails in Outlook/Outlook Expresss?

Read down the thread, you'll see some very helpful techies explaining exactly how to do it.

An important note for all MoneySavers

To make sure the weekly Money Tips e-mail always gets through if you've got hotmail just add martinsmoneytips@moneysavingexpert.com to your contacts list.

I know you are busy Martin, but get one of your ghost writers to update this very outdated information.

Last time I looked Hotmail had given me at least 2 GB free as a free Hotmail user, and possibly more (I have not needed to keep up with just how much as it is more than enough).

Ditto Yahoo from memory, they are all competing with Gmail for storage size now.

I am at work now, (skiving, but that is another matter I have mentioned before elsewhere, thanks to Gordon Brown), so I cannot access Hotmail to check just how much it currently is.

It's a thread from 2007, of course it's out of date. If you hadn't posted to it today, it wouldn't have bumped the thread back up to 2009 contributions and it would have stayed buried in ancient threads never to see the light of day!

It's old hat, you can't expect the MSE team to crawl over every thread written several years ago and update when new things come of light surely?! Unless you fancy doing it for free...

You can't beat gmail! Storage is approaching 8GB now. It's just so much more functional than Hotmail.
Try to imagine nothing ever existed...

Windows Live SkyDrive is excellent though. I use its 25 GB of free storage to back up my photos.

I have been a gmail user since it started up over here. It is so good as you can delete all mail arriving in Windows in the secure knowledge that it is safely stored on gmail. Now have separate addresses for my wife, plus 3 spare addresses for "other" email enquiries. Brilliant!
